Video store says I did not take a movie back - and I did. What to do?

I rented the movie and returned it.

Now weeks later they say I did not.

They are talking 'theft' and other things and seem unreasonable. I'm not about to pay for something I don't owe.

What to do?

Which video store? I suppose the burden of proof would fall somewhere. This would suck. Good luck

When they say "No, you didn't", you say "Yes, I did". Repeat as needed...

They are saying I owe it, and that eventually they report it to the law. They already tried to charge my credit card (but I had cancelled that one that I used when I signed up).

How did you return it? Drop box or counter> I always return in the counter and let them scan it in. Same thig with the library.

Drop box, as I have done for years.

If this is like Blockbuster, then just keep bitching at them and speaking to manager and eventually they will take it off.

However, if this is a smaller owned video store...i'm not sure, but just do the same thing.

What I don't understand is how they can report me to the law? I reported once that I knew who broke into my house and the cops told me 'if you didn't see it you can't prove it'. Should this not have the same standard of proof?

I refuse to pay something I did not do. Any lawyers in the house?

One time, same thing happened to me. I told them I returned the video and I was extremely pissed because they said I didn't return it but I DID. I suspect somebody(employee) at the store took it after it was returned. Anyway, I refused to pay for the full price(they wanted to charge me retail price for that movie). I talked and talked and talked and yelled. At the end, they gave up and didn't charge me anything.

Sue them for emotional discomfort and financial duress.

They'll take that charge off pretty quick.

Just find a new video store. They probably won't do anything about it. At worst they send it to a collection agency.

yeah blockbuster is good about that... they believed me after I said it straight up to them (I was just being honest)... they took it off.

Is this a mom & pop store or what ?

You have to go look for the movie on the shelf and hope there's not a lot of them. Then pick it up and ask them to scan it. That's what I had to do with my library books. I wish I could sue them into getting their act together whenever this happens..
