I'm considering making my own lightsaber duel video. I've been reading differnet tuturials and from what I've seen the effect is done frame by frame. A very lengthy process to produce the effect.

Is this the only way make such effects or is there a more advance/quicker way? If frame by frame retroscoping is the only way, so be it, I'll have no choice, but it would be nice for a faster method.

why can't you just use a stick painted a color that isn't in the scene, then use rendering software to replace that color with the effect?
i'm pretty sure that is how they do it.

Sounds legit to me, sort of like a reverse green-screen effect, using green on objects instead of the background.

Is frame by frame the only way? Yes and No. There is very powerful software out there that can make it less time consuming. After Affects Pro with its tracking capabilities for example.

If you don?t use the tracking capabilities and have to "keyframe" every frame what you should do is do the first and last keyframe, then half that, then half that. So on and so forth. In this manner you will often find you do not need to keyframe every frame.

Cattlegod has a very good idea though

Don't you just hate when your hands don't listen to your brian and do things on their own.
