Video recording, and encoding

I didn't know where to put this thread of mine, so I ended up over here. I have a question that I hope someone can help me with. Basically, I would like to record a video and then upload it to YouTube. However, I notice when using fraps that a 10 minute video becomes a 4GB file and even more when I record at 1080p. There is no way I can upload something like that to YouTube. I read that I can encode the video and make it smaller in size while keeping the quality, 1080p. Does anyone know how I can do this? I would appreciate any help I can get on this subject.
