Video Ram

I am wondering if anyone has heard of an ASUS V7700 Geforce2 GTS video card, or any video card, losing one of the memory chips and the card still functions. I currently have that card and when the PC first boots there is an ID screen that shows the card make, model and RAM. Mine use to say, ASUS V7700 32.0MB , now it says ASUS V7700 16.0MB. Is it possible for one of the 16MB RAM chips to go bad and now the card only sees 16? All this happens before the motherboard goes through it's bios screen. The ID is the first thing the shows up after the machine is turned on and before it goes through the memory count and all the other bios setup stuff.

I have already called ASUS about this and they have no idea. If the card is in warrenty I have to send it in, for who knows how long, while they check it out and they won't send a temporary one to me while they have mine, so obviously I want that to be a last resort. Is there someway I can check it myself with a program or something? I am open to any ideas suggestion or comments to help me figure this out. Thanks in advance.

You could try reseating the card but it does sound like something had failed on the card. But...I thought most GTS cards had 4x8mb modules, my Creative one certainly did....would be odd that 2 chips would go.

See if Sandra says it's 16 or 32mb. But if it's occuring at the bios startup for the card then it probably will only show 16, is it possible at all to flash the bios on a graphics card?...probably not flashable.

well I installed SANDRA and it is only showing 16 mb too. It is looking like one of the chips isn't working anymore, and yes there are only 2 memory chips on my ASUS card, I know that for sure. I am going to try reseating the card tonight, but somehow I don't think that will work, That never seems to fix anything. Any other ideas?

Well last night I removed card, which by the way I did notice has 4 chips, not 2, (I was sure I saw 2 when I installed it 1 yr and a half ago, guess my memory isn't what it use to be LOL). Anyway I removed it, blew the dust off it and reseated it, still the same thing. When the machine is turned on and that ID screen for the card comes up, it still only shows 16MB. Anyone have any other suggestions?

Thanks in advance

RMA the card or buy a new one. Heck, for $100 ish you can get a GF4-4200 64mb that will rock....well that's if your system is a P3-900 or better 🙂
