As mentioned earlier, everybody's face is different. I can't get into too much detail because I am still on NDA, however there is much more engineering in these blades than one would imagine. The actual blade varies in composition as the generation goes on.

Somebody worked(s) for Gillette. 😉

Yeah, it was a great time. 2.5 years as a Co-op from Northeastern University. Probably the only good thing about this expensive school.

I don't see the big deal. I can shave with a dry face and a dull ravor and not have any problems.... I have nicked myself exactly one time ever shaving.

What I've always wondered about is how good is an old fashioned straight razor vs today's modern cartridge razors.

I almost cringed when he shaved against the grain with the DE, especially since he said it was his first time. I was expecting a piece of his skin to come off with it but perhaps they aren't as dangerous as I thought?

He got lucky 😀 I wasn't so lucky when I tried that in the labs. Skin would not stop bleeding for over 40 minutes.

I started shaving in the DE days and I used to shave daily against the grain with no loss of skin.

Where's a good place to buy an old fashioned razor for a reasonable price? I was looking at that msnbc link and if you want the razor, brush, soap, etc it's going to cost at least $100 or more.

Try looking here. Dig around the forums and such, you should be able to find yourself some deals and whatnot.

For those of you who already use a DE, how would it do for shaving my head? I shave my head 2-3 times a week using a Mach 3 Turbo. I've thought about switching to a DE but have been worried about nicking up my scalp.

I know a guy that shaves his head and swears by this thing.

I have one, use the shaving cream and the glossy head lotion (keep the jokes to yourself perves)

All of it wors great, I shave my head 3-4 times a week and can do it in 10mins or less with the headblade.

That guy has an easy shave anyway, his face is so fat that it's all flat. For those of us with chins and jaws I'm sure the DE would be more difficult to use.

Not really. It takes a bit of practice but I don't find shaving with a DE anymore difficult than shaving with multibladed beast. The DE is less forgiving if you're lazy though.

Meh, been there and done that.

I used cartridges for a long while before switching to a safety razor on the advice of my Dad. I was never impressed with how unshaven I still appeared if I shaved with the grain nor how irritated my skin felt if I shaved against it (note that I grow dark, thick stubble and have fairly sensitive skin)

So I'm back to cartridges

My new routine:
Shower
Hot, wet towel on face for 1 min
Neutrogena Razor Defense Shave Gel applied w/shaving brush
Cryogenically-tempered Schick Quattro
Dry, then wait 10 min
Neutrogena Razor Defense Face Lotion

and that's that...close as can be and no irritation

How did this whole DE thing come about? It seems like only relatively recently too. First it was moving to 4 to 5 blades and now back to 2? Geez. I can't keep up.

Who makes the best DE razor? I assume Merkurs? That name comes up alot.

Everybody is different. Just beause brand xyz works well for one person, doesn't mean it will work well for you.

Don't tell me that! I was just looking at placing my order 🙁

Honestly, I don't think you'll regret it. I actually enjoy my shaves in the morning with a brush, good cream and a DE. It actually feels a little decadent.
wow, i don't know why but that just sounds like the gayest way of describing one of the most masculine morning routines.

=|

I can't believe so many people take half an hour to shave in the morning. If you have to get up and shave everyday then conduct business of some sort, the whole 1hour bathroom routine has to become a huge waste of time.

Merkur makes nice razors, but their tolerances on the Progress leave something to be desired. I ended up getting a Gillette adjustable and I haven't used the Merkur since. The Gillette is less aggressive but mainly I don't have the differences in the gaps between either side of the blade like I did with the Merkur. I have not really heard of any complaints about the gaps with Merkur's non-adjustable line.

I've finally settled on the Gillette Adjustable razor from 1959 with Derby blades. Allows me to go through and give myself a very close shave everyday. Was never able to do that with the multiblade cartridge razors.

i love my DE razor. i have a nice Gillette adjustabe and a non adjustable gillette and a GEM jr. of course i use the adjustable (set to 5). the others i got free or very cheap.

though i need to get a good badger brush and some good creams. also need some razors since im down to 3 heh.

I'll stick with my electric. 5 minutes abd I'm done. I have no desire to take extra time.

ZV

i could never do electrics. i have tried expensive ones and it just tears up my face.

but since i do not work takeing 30minuts to shave is ok with me. heh

I have a scar on the side of my neck, and there was a stitch there before (about 19 years ago, I'm 21 now)

Is it possible that I can shave with a DE blade? I do so currently with a Mach 3 Power (or Nitro, or whatever it's called [that green vibrating one]) and I don't seem to have any problems with it right now, but I thought I'd ask before I tried it out with DE.

My maternal grandad uses a DE blade, and I saw what it was, and it look's exactly like the one Feldenak posted a picture of. I think it would be wicked cool to have a DE.
