I have a Chaintech GeForce 6600GT running with a core frequency of 600MHz and a memory frequency or 1.2GHz. I got these numbers by clicking the "detect optimal frequencies" button in the advanced display properties window.

I dont really know how to describe my problem or what its called so here is a picture from Black and White 2;

I have circled some (not all) of the problem. In newer games like black and white 2 and age of empires 3 I have seen this problem but it has been the worst in this game. About 30-60 seconds after the game has started up I get this sputtering all over the environment. Its just rapidly flashing all over the place and I dont know why. Does anyone have any ideas as to what is causing this?

Does this happen at stock speeds? Try returning to the original clocks and see if the problem is reproduced.

Also check the temperatures, if available. If you have no way to check temps (temp monitoring was disabled in some some 6600GT BIOS, dunno why), then try running with the side of the case off and a fan blowing in there. What PSU are you using?

when I alt+tab out of the game nTune says my GPU is running at 70 degrees C. If I stay in windows for a few seconds it drops down to about 60, and if I exit the game completely it goes down to around 45. I dont really know anything about GPU operating temperatures, what should it be at? What is an acceptable operating temp?

I have an Antec Neo Power 480W PSU. Ill try returning the clock speeds to deffault later.

Under 100-degrees C is fine for that card, and your PSU looks good. I would definitely try lowering clockspeed to be able to isolate the problem.

I lowered the clockspeeds back down to the stock 3D level of 500mhz core and 1ghz memory and the problem seems to be gone. Guess I had them set a little too high, Ill have to research more before I raise them again.

The stock speeds may simply be the limits of the chips; good to see things are sorted out at least.
