For some god-unknown reason, my windows XP SP1 machine decided it didn't want to play any video anymore, a week after i just ghosted the C drive with a fresh install. Tried reinstalling drivers, DivX, Nimp, etc., but nothing worked.
Through some combination of reinstalling drivers, fixes, and messing with configurations, i managed to get it to work somewhat. Unfortunately, it now seemed like i was watching a video through a zoom lens. 25% of all sides around were cut off so that it was like i was watching a video zoomed in.
Finally managed to find a solution by going into WMP->Tools->Options->Performance Tab->advanced. Unchecked the "use overlays" box, and it miraculously works. But when i turn "use overlays" back on, video goes back to the sides-and-top-cut-off zoom thing.
Another note that might help: When the video was just showing a black screen, I got it to work for a while by setting video acceleration down to "none," but that's obviously not an ideal solution.
WinAmp also stops the zoom thing when i turn off the overlay function in the settings. Unfortunately, it displays everything upside down.
Question: I've never messed with overlays, so i have no clue why it suddenly crapped out on me. What's the big deal with using overlays, and why did it break my video playback? It would playback audio sometimes, but the picture would always be blacked out.
Question 2: WinAmp continues to play all videos upside down. How do i fix this?
Question 3: What do all the advanced settings do in WMP options?
Question 4: Windows update did some hocus pocus thing and updated my nvidia drivers after i installed the detonator drivers. How do i know if i'm now running an out-of-date version of the detonator drivers? I don't want to install over it again, because i dont want to risk breaking things again.
System:
Windows XP Pro, SP1
GeForce2 GTS 32mb, Detonator drivers v44.03
Athlon 1.2/768MB PC133
