Video Playback Problems

I currently use Windows Media Player and the Divx 2.0 alpha player to playback videos on my PC. Between the 2, they can playback a decent amount of the movies I have. However, I still have some that will not play in either player. I have one that is an .AVI, but it won't play in either. I've got a couple of mpegs that don't play either. My point is that they aren't weird file types...pretty standard stuff.

My initial reaction is that it is a codec issue. However, I have no idea how to tell which codec I am missing before this video to play.

I'm wondering :

(1) How can you tell which codec you are missing.

(2) Is there a good media player that can support ALL file types??

Any help would be appreciated...

In my media player 7 I can click on FILE - PROPERTIES (after starting the file in question), and it will tell me the name of the audio and video codec being used.

In Win98 you can tell what codecs you have installed by going to: CONTROL PANEL - MULTIMEDIA - DEVICES - VIDEO COMPRESSION CODECS and AUDIO COMPRESSION CODECS

I think they are always coming out with new ones, so most likely no one player will always work on its own.
