53% of highschoolers don't know anything about anything.

Kids in high schools seem stupid these days. Kids can graduate high school without knowing how to add fractions or read above an elementary school level. For some reason they just dont seem to bother failing/holding kids back.

there is tons of horrible history that a lot of kids do not know much about, I am sure there is plenty you don't know about. Go read about East Timor, or how the good old USA started. Neither is a pretty picture. Now instead of jumping on the "the world is going to hell in a handbasket" crowd, hows about doing something about it?

uhh...these schools are just retarded...in my school district we learned about holocaust (not in detail or anything) in middle school. and we watched schindler's list in middle school too.

Shens. My school district had fits about showing R rated films to high schools, even historical ones.

there's no way it can be 53%, they probably polled some pretty stupid schools

anyone high schooler who doesn't know major world events like genocides (holocaust, gulag, rwanda, cambodia, etc.) should hit the history books

our school lets us watch them with permission slips

I learned almost everything I know from the Sesame Street, the Simpsons, Captain Planet, & the History Channel.

IIRC they made a seperate "cleaned up" version of the movie for schools.

The holocaust is only talked about to the extent it is because it involved a large majority of Jewish people and they happen to own most of the media, call that a racist statement- whatever- but it IS the truth- and good luck disproving it, if you need links I'll get them....I'm not saying there is anything wrong with the owners of the media....Truth is the holocaust was only a small part of the wronging's in that era and personally I feel it is given more attention then it deserves given the small amount of time spent teaching that era in general......

Here's a link to some estimated world war 2 death numbers....funny how noone talks about the millions of Chinese/Russians that were slaughtered......at least Natalie Portmans' ancestors made it out alive- Thank God for that!

Most Russians consider the slaughter you speak of to be part of the holocaust..

It should be included in the teaching here as well....I know it was never taught to me in school- only that communism was bad 😛......It's one thing to discuss the horror of 6 million people being slaughtered- it's another to discuss the horror of 6 million people being slaughtered and conveniently forget about 14 million more who suffered the same fate because it won't help you meet your goals of discussion- whatever they may be.....that almost seems like racism/nationalism to me..... 50+ million died in world war 2, they all deserve to be remembered- not just one group....

At least, a lot more people know about Holocaust than what Japanese did during WWII.
Hell, it was U.S that was so nice to cover up Japanese massacres across Asia.

Compared to Japanese, Germans were damn NICE to those poor Jewish people as they just killed most of them.

What did Japanese do? One of the examples would be what Unit 731 has done. And, how U.S government didn't charge them anything in exchange of their works. Even worse, the guy who formed and operated Unit 731 became a principal of an university and lived peacefully after the war.

Yeah, read the the book Flyboys. It's eye-opening.

In addition to my last post, some of the experiments were

(a "log" was the term Unit 731 used for their prisoners and all experiments were done without anaesthetist)

1. putting a log into centrifugal separator to see how human body gets torn apart
2. having a log freeze in -40 Celcius then suddenly pouring 80 Celcious hot water
3. cutting off various body parts
4. opening chest, taking heart out
5. taking off logs flesh
6. injecting various bacteria
7. killing 6month old baby and making it stay in log's womb
8. Killing a pregnent log to see how long baby would survive
8. pouring acid on logs
9. Exchanging body and organ parts between logs

There're a lot more experiments that are worse than what's listed up there.
Anyway, the worst of the worst is that U.S goverment didn't charge them ANYTHING in exchange of their works. The commander who formed and operated Unit 731 later became a principal of Tyoko university and no officers were charged, all under U.S government's gurdian of Japan at that time.

Flipping through channels yesterday I landed on MTV, showning a video called "I'm Still Here: Real Diaries of Young People Who Lived During the Holocaust".

It was quite a good little documentary. Very informative and sad. I want to record it, but I haven't seen any future recordings scheduled.

I was astonished by one statistic though: "53% of highschoolers don't know anything about the holocaust"...so they say. Can this be true? Are schools just not teaching about it? I certainly remember covering it several times when I was in highschool (western civ, 20th century, german class, etc...)

It boggles the mind and saddens it more.

Sh!t I wanted to see it. Wait a minute this is MTV they will show it like a million more times.

Me neither.

I just googled about it and found:
When Ishii wanted a human brain to experiment upon, guards were assigned to acquire the organ. Grabbing a prisoner, the guards held him down, while another cleaved open his skull with an axe. The organ was clumsily removed and rushed to Ishii?s laboratory. The remains of the ?sacrificed? prisoner were then ?disposed? of in the camp crematorium. Other prisoners could look forward to equally horrific experimentation. Live dissection was common-place.

🙁

Even if somebody does that kind of experiments on animals, he'd in deep trouble.

Japan?s war conduct was atrocious as well. The only place conceivably worse than the eastern front would have been mainland Asia and a few Pacific islands. They fought a war with no mercy and recevied as much because of it.

POWs in Japanese hands also had the highest mortality rate of any POWs in the entire war. They starved, killed for sport, and worked thousands to death. Many Allied POWs were victims of Allied submarine and aircraft attacks as the Japanese refused to mark the hellships carrying POWs.

Not even to mention what horrible things the Japanese Imperial Army did to the civilian Asian populations.

that cant be true. I went to highschool in florida, which i think is 40something in the worst educated states(see i cant even count) and everyone i know, or even some of the dum dums i spoke to, would easily know anything the holocaust. MTV probably took 10 mexicans that cant speak a lick of english and gave them the quiz.

I probably knew more about the Holocaust by 6th grade than most people ever hear about their entire lives. My elementary school teacher was Jewish and I lived in the Lower East Side in NYC (lots of orthodox Jews). So it's completely absurd to me that people don't know more about it.

Oddly enough though, I know zip about the religion.
