There is an interesting back-story on this one. During the 80?s the Regan administration was under increasing pressure to supply the Afghani mujahideen fighting the Russians with a means to take down Russian helicopters which were in most ways invulnerable to the small arms the mujahideen possessed.

Finally Regan broke down and sent Stingers to the Afghans, this despite many arguments that the weapons were too complex, too fragile etc (and of course the wisdom of those who understood the nightmare that would come later when trying to account for all of the unused munitions ? something we ended up paying millions to various ?terrorists? in a poorly organized buy back attempt years later).

This video was made for Regan and his staff as evidence of the weapons efficacy. What you don?t see in this edited version are the mujahideen descending down closer to the base and shooting the possible survivors of the crash.

The video marks an important milestone in the Russian occupation of Afghanistan. Subsequent to this and other ?shoot-downs? of helicopters the Russian pilots changed strategies. no longer willing to fly slow and low shooting at donkey laden supply lines (another great story on that one some other time) and less able to support ground troops, etc etc etc further demoralizing both the ground and air troops.

its an sa7 grail.... sa7 grail not stinger

yeah.

It looks like they took out an engine and forced it to land. If it was the tail rotor, it would have been spinning wildly.

I don't like helicopters but that is just wrong.

Not to mention the animals pulling the trigger are having some sort of breakdown. Pity they didn't swallow their tongue and choke on it. Or perhaps they did.

I think this clip is from people fighting Russian (communist at the time) occupation.

One could argue that russia occupying chechnya is same as usa occupying california. What if mexicans want california to become its own country run by mexicans (I'm not saying that is remotely possible, just using rhetoric), will usa "occupy" california with its military or let it go? If you want to use the "chechens were living there before therefore they have a right to autonomy" same could be said about mexicans who were living in california before it was part of usa.

You're comparing apples to oranges. Chechnya was forcefully occupied by Russia in 19h century and chechen people have been brutally opressed since then.

I remember seeing this video a long time ago.
Terrorist claimed they shot down an American copper was one of the things I read at that time. As others have pointed out it probably was Russian or something.

Why are you calling the USA terrorists? Clearly the people on the ground are on OUR side shooting down a Big, Bad Communist chopper. Shouldn't they be heros?

I dont think this was filmed in the late 80's nor in afghanistan.

Lack of the bigass heatsink found on the Stinger shoulder lanuncher was a dead giveaway even before reading the comments.
