video glitch destroying computer....what should I do?

When I boot up my computer, I get a horrible video error when windows xp tries to boot. It looks like the screen you would get on an old 8 bit NES when the game wasn't inserted correctly (not that purple screen, the one with all the weird multicolored blocks and stuff). I'm not sure what's causing it, but it's gotten more and more frequent over the last few months, and now it happens pretty much every time I boot. My ATI AIW 8500 DV has been getting very hot recently (almost to the point where it burns you when you touch it) even though the fan on the heatsink is still spinning. Should it be this hot? It's still under warranty, so I could RMA it, but I don't know if that's what's causing it and I don't want to risk the downtime unless i'm reasonably sure. It could also be the mobo/cpu/memory since they've been a little glitchy now that I've started using the SATA. I wish I had another agp card lying around to try in the system, but I don't. Any advice on how to troubleshoot this problem?

1) it should not be getting that hot
2) I would RMA it, you'll get something better and be glad in the long run

That's what I'm thinking too, it's just the process of being without a vid card while this thing makes its way to canada, then has a 10 day processing time, then comes back from canada...that's a good 2.5 to 3 weeks...

Can you go buy a cheap $10-20 vid card? Or if you dont have any morals you could get a $50 card like a ati 9200 pro and return it after you get your other one back.

well, i got desperate and uninstalled sp2, then reinstalled everything and moved some other pci cards away from the agp slot and now it's running ok again....I'm gonna leave it on overnight and see if it locks. I'm currently asking around to see if any of my buddies have a 4x agp card they're not using.

well, after a full night the system is stable again....not sure what to make of this, but i'll let it run all day today to see...

ok....I took out my linksys wireless card, unplugged my extra hdd's, and disabled the sata feature in my mobo bios and now the computer's stable....I guess I'll look internally, and add back the features one by one until I can find out what's going on....but I want to keep all these features. any suggestions?
