System was running fine till few days ago. Now noticed on bf2, cod2 above gliches while playing, spots in background, major flickering. I am not OC'ing anything. I tried using new ati drivers & omega drivers, even older version drivers, but it does the same on all - even in offline play. Have run virus scan etc. - no issues. Pls help

ran ati tool. picked up many artifacts. lowered clock core speed from 398 to 370. seems to now run ok. But why will it not now run on default settings?

What were the temps topping out at under load?

I have a friend with a 9800XT in a system with very poor airflow. He has to run it underclocked or with the case cover off else he gets artifacting and weird visual anomalies.

Just an FYI, that 398 was an overclock. It comes stock at 378 I believe. It wouldn't hurt to get an ATI Silencer or something like that anyway - I have one, it lowered my case temps by 3-4C, and it's completely quiet.

I burnt out 2 ati 9800 pros by overclocking them with the XT bios. I had ati silencers on them and they still stopped working. Make sure your card is not running too hot and that the fan is free of dust so it can operate. On the 2nd one the fan got clogged and I came home to find a dead card and a clogged heatsync.

default is set @ 398 for core. I use atitool to lower to 370 - everything OK. But everytime windows restarts after shutdown it resets core to 398. What do I do? All fans have been cleaned out.

Open your case sides and put a room fan pointing at it? Oh, buy a window air conditioner and put it right next to it!! That'd be pimp.

No, a new aftermarket cooler should do you okay. As long as you don't have any mishaps installing it and all.
