Video game prices

I remember paying $40 to $50 for NES games, and that was almost 20 years ago (or am I losing it?). I think I paid $40 for Far Cry, $50 for HL2, $50 for COD2, $40 for FEAR, well, you get the picture.

Assuming high quality, I'd be happy to pay more for games. There are simply not enough games out there to keep me satisfied, I seem to always be waiting for some game to come out, with nothing really to tide me over. Looking back, I would have paid $75 to $100 for Far Cry, Vice City, and maybe a few other games, considering how many hours of enjoyment they offered me.

If higher prices for games is what it will take to get more good games on the market, so be it. I buy maybe 3 games per year because I only like shooters. That flat out sucks. I want more good games, and I am willing to pay for them.

Too fvcking much. I miss my $40 new releases 🙁

Most games nowadays aren't worth $20, much less $50 or $60.

After buying Warcraft III the day of arrival for $72.50 I've vowed to never pay more than $30 for a game again. If another Deus Ex or Lands of Lore: Guardians of Destiny is made and sold for ~$100 then I'll reconsider, but until then I'll stick with cheap ones. Far Cry was a great game but nothing worth $50. Thankfully there's always a Russian man on eBay willing to cut the price in half.

High-budget games were never that cheap... hell, old Bungie used to sell their games for $70 each... although they were well worth the extra cost.

Thanks, EA.

😕

Have you never heard of Blizzard, Bungie, and other such companies that have had a premium since the mid-90's? If anything EA has been helping with cheaper games. Sure, the cheap games are garbage, but there's still a budget line anyways.

For every good $40~60 game I have purchased there have been at least 2 bad games bought at that price too. I usually just wait until a game has been out for a while and buy for $20~30

I recall Diablo II being $45 on release day.

Of course I plunked down $60 for the collector's edition 🙂

Way too much considering the bad quality and horrible replay value of most of them. Too many just get tiring after one runthrough and are never touched again.

Dark Messiah: Good concept, but too linear and with no replay value. The branching storylines aren't really that great, or branching.
Oblivion: Heck of a lot of replay value, but it dies if you get really far and then lose your savegames, like from a system format 🙁
FEAR, Far Cry, COD2: really meh IMO

The only game of late that was worth a $50 price tag was Company of Heroes, IMO. We need more quality games like that.

*prays for Crysis and TF2 and Quake Wars and Stalker*

Unfortunately, the only place game prices are likely to go is up, with in-game advertising to boot :disgust:

It seems to me that most games have always been about $49 at release. Most substantial games anyway. Only recently are games starting higher by habit (360, PS3) and the collector editions don't really count because they come with more than just the game anyway. But yeah, back in the day, NES games were 49.99; SNES games were 49.99 (though I recall that at release, I paid 59.99 for FF2); N64 games were 49.99; PS1 games were 49.99... PS2 games were 49.99... So I feel like, considering inflation, prices have declined while quality has improved. Going from Excitebike to something like GTA3 is a 10,000-fold improvement in many categories. So I don't really have any gripes about game prices, unless I pay $50 for a game and find out it sucks. But usually I won't buy something unless I've played it before or have a REALLY good feeling about it.

$50 is as much as I can pay for a game, and at that price it has to be something I've been eagerly anticipating.

But that is basically my point. 20 years ago, some of us paid $50 for Super Mario Brothers. 😀

Are prices really going up?

The only difference I have seen are the "DVD Collector's Edition" selling for, say, $10 more than the 5 cd-rom version.

I agree, but I don't look at it in the same way. Yes, the quality is higher, but that is mostly due to technology. I feel like we are paying the same amount, which like you said, doesn't really follow inflation, but we see less good games. And IMO, I am willing to pay more than $50 for the games that are good and offer good replay value (perhaps through MP).

One reason that prices might have remained static is that the market is more saturated with alternatives now. You have a choice of many different games for 3 console systems and your PC as well as DVDs and a lot more cable channels.

I remember paying $70 for Street Fighter II on the SNES. $60 isn't bad considering the outlets you have to resell your games nowadays if you don't want them.

I don't know world some of you guys are from but NES, SNES, and N64 games were on average higher then $50. I remember plenty of SNES games retailed at $70 as well as N64.
The $50 price tag didn't really become standard till PS1 as none of its game went pass that mark. While I don't like games retailing for $60 (for 360 and PS3) and do agree a lot of games aren't worth it cause of many factors but in the end a $10 increase isn't that bad since we were riding the $50 price for nearly 10 years and still are thanks to the Wii.

Kao

I've never played any game as much as CS and CS source. Both for 20 bucks. Been playing since sophmore year of high school and that was 6-7 years ago. I still play cs source regularly. The only other game that had me hooked was WoW, Farcry, UT2K4 and Team Fortress Classic. I'm awaiting quake wars and Team Fortress Source. Those two games will make me feel better about the slew of games we have now.

Yea I remember getting Phantasy Star IV for like $80 but that's when Carts with lots of memory were really expensive.

depends, i paid alot for n64 cartridges at launch/shortly thereafter.
69.99-79.99

for the right game i'd pay that or more, but it would have to be a game that i was certain i'd play for a long time.

i would never pay $75-100 for ANY game. that is fvcking ridiculous and you'd have to be a fvcking moron to want to pay that much.

hell, i think $50 is too much sometimes. $40 is about right for me

Definitely too much...but honestly it has made me buy less games...but generally of higher quality. I definitely tend to read the reviews or play the demo before making any purchases. I also seem to be finishing more of the games since I'm less likely to buy a new game before I finish the old one which is common for me.

I just wait until they show up on GoGamer.com's 48 hour madness sale. Or just wait until the new release hype wears off and it's prices slashed... New releases are too expensive for the lowsy quality that games are nowadays. Games are costing more money and ending up worse. Sort of like Hollywood movies.
