Video editing Question:

When putting a 16x9 clip on a DVD, is it okay for it to appear distorted/Full-scree in a video editing program(pinnacle studio 8) ?

I assume the DVD player will resize it to the sorrect aspect ratio automatically, right? Currently I am making a video clip with various aspect ratios etc. I have only made VCDs and SVCDs in the past, and have always had to format then into a 480x480 box, adding black bars where necessary...

I only ask because I do not want to make my first DVD a coaster

i imagine that while editing, Pinnacle isn't using the full resolution of the picture. Ay my work (we use Final Cut Pro), I think the software uses low resolution frames to speed things up.

I **think** that's how it works. However, I would just make a few coasters to test it.

There's a whole host of funny issues encoding DVD's.

With an "anamorphic" DVD, the picture is encoded to the full fram, and the DVD player "stretches" the picture at playback time.

If Pinnacle doesn't show a 16:9 preview window, I would assume that yes, you'd see a "squished" picture during editing.

HOWEVER... ensure that Pinnacle will encode the "this is a 16:9 movie" bit in the bitstream.

This is probably one of those times where rewritable media comes in handy.

Goose, I think the answer here is "well, it depends." I suggest you e-mail/post this Q over at the Pinnacle forums. I can tell you what I do when using Avid or FCP, but that wouldn't really help you out that much.

I guess I will have to do that and get some extra DVD's....


Then again, my living room DVD player reads DVD+RW
