I'm going to start editing a long (1 hour+) film and I dont want to switch programs once I'm started. I can get Avid Xpress Pro or Premiere Pro very cheaply to use on my PC at home. I never liked Vegas' interface much. If it would be that much better and easier to use FCP I could buy a mac, but Id prefer not to spend that money. What program do you think will give me the most power and the least trouble?

i've always liked premiere, pro is very easy to use, assuming you don't want to do anything more advanced than A/B editing with some cuts and sound mixing

Stay in the native format (DV I assume)
Vegas is a toy, Get avid.
Use the logging tool and read up on Media management.
I have seen several projects go south due to limitations with the editing program.
(P.S. I do this for a living)

Avid  especially if your using DV as your medium.... just be sure to save a bunch!! I lost a 30 min mockumentary because of a crash :|

It's almost as good as Final Cut... unless you want to spend a few grand on a Mac and Final Cut pro software, if price were no option Final Cut is the best imo, but not by much.

Final cut is where it is at for HD

Standard def....
Get the avid.

Disclaimer.
We use macs in both of our rooms.
I don't know squat about the PC version of the avid,

Lack of features.
Like EDL handleing and color correction
If you just need to "Edit" I guess it would be fine.......

I've used Vegas briefly in the past and it's a solid program, I was very impressed with what it could do with audio. But It's interface takes some getting used to. With the other packages once you've learned one you can more or less throw yourself into another without much learning to do.... and star wipe out ;)
