Video Editing on AMD 64?

When Windows XP-64bit arrives, and programs like Adobe Premiere are optimized for 64-bit, will the A64 have any chance of contending with Intel for content creation/video editing? I'm planning on building a nice machine based on A64, but I do plan to do a good amount of video editing. Should I start looking into Intel solutions? I rather like the idea of 64bit, and have all my PCs are AMD, but I do want good performance in video editing. I game too.

Is it only possible to speculate now or do I just have to wait until it's released and see?
 
What we have here is a common misnomer, just because P4 is better at media encoding doesn't mean A64 sux 😉 A64 has good performance across the board just as P4 does.
 
I wasn't saying it sucks, I'm a big fan of AMD. I want to build an A64 system, but I just read a saw a bunch of benchmarks today. The A64 beat the Intel chips in most everything except for rendering and content creation. In those disciplines, the Intel chips beat the A64 very easily. I guess a lot of other factors will make a big difference in video editing as well.
 
The A64 can contend with Intel already in 32-bit processing.

What you are really asking is how will going to 64-bit OSes and programs benefit the user, and is
that potential benefit worth it for you to continue using AMD, or buy a P4 based machine instead.

So what are some advantages that an Adobe Premiere(64) could have on Windows XP-64?

* Better use of available memory

* More processing registers available in 64-bit mode.

* New features / effects built into the new version to take advantage of other elements of x86-64s enhanced mode.









 
Use benchmarks as guides to assist in making a decision. Always remember that those benchmark numbers where attained on a system that was just previously reformatted and have a fresh install of windows. The only thing on the HD other than windows is the benchmark software. On home pc where you have 15 games, office, Norton?s, PhotoShop, and whatever the systems are barely indistinguishable. I went form a XP2000+ to a P4 2.633 (533fsb) and have saved an average of 45 sec?s per DVD to convert it for my HD. Yes, now I really have time to spare. 🙂

Some preliminary 64bit tests on the A64(using 64bit Linux)show that 64bit on the A64 certainly has the potential to beat P4s strong areas. It remains to be seen how well Win 64 works though.
