Video driver instalation in Win XP (tried search)

Im having a problem geting a good install of video drivers with XP.

first off XP automaticly installed drivers for my geforce 2 MX 200 when in installed the OS.

It wont let me uninstall them. well it will but then they are auto installed back when i reboot.

in win2k the neccesary procedure was to uninstall the old drivers, delete the registry entries, reboot with SVGA drivers, and then install the new ones.

Since i cant seem to do all of those steps in XP, are my drivers being installed correctly? the reason I ask is Im having trouble with a particular game (dungeon siege) that originaly worked and then after an error quit working. after installing new drivers and reinstalling the game I get even more errors and the problem gets worse.

have you tried using the update driver button in device manager??

yes. that just installs the microsoft driver from the net. hopefully when i get my GF4 in a few days I will have better luck.

right now im just wanting to know if XP does a better job handling driver info and registry entries. In other words do I need to do all the normal file and registry cleanup like I would with win2k or win98, or do I just need to run the auto installer and forget about it.

I think my problem right now is software related and not driver relwated. Im just curious about the issue.

If you don't want XP to automatically install the default drivers for your geforce, you can delete the .inf file in the system32 folder (it should be one of the oem#.inf files. open each one of them to find the nVidia inf file). This, however, will not get rid of the .dll and other system files (some will be gone when you uninstall the default geforce drivers). Also, you can use a registry cleaner program to delete any nVidia registry settings, along with the nVidia-specific registry setting in controlset1 & controlset2 in the registry.

I've been fighting with Nvidia and detonator drivers for quite some time. The correct procedure to install a new pack of drivers in WinXP is the following : 1) Uninstall previous version of Nvidia drivers (if any), reboot 2) Now the system will autodetect the card and plug it's own driver (yuck) 3) take whatever steps necessary to install this driver (reboot, whatever) 4) As soon as the built in driver is up and running forceupdate the driver to Standard PCI VGA Adapter, reboot. 5) When you log on again it shows 640x480x16color. 6) Install the new detonator drivers NOW!

the problem is I cant figure out how to force standard VGA mode.

the point is moot now, though. I gave up. kept freezing, locking up and any number of other pain in the ass problems. I went back to win2k pro. Im not even going to attemp to install XP untill they have 2 service packs out for the POS. Im thouroughly disapointed in that OS. If i didnt want to have any controll over my OS i would buy a freakin Mac.

XP seems to have serious issues with VIA chipsets.
