I am getting an ipod video for xmas. I was wondering how difficult it is to convert videos from one format or compression to another.

For instance I may have some .wmv that I want to play on the ipod.

its there a tool that can do these sort of things, if so what is it ?

I've had a Creative Zen Media Center a little over a year now, wanted to put some movies on it for a long flight this summer.

I bought a program called dvd2ppc, which did make it easier, but it was still a slow process, and some would not work no matter what I tried.

Hopefully the Ipod conversion routine is better. It is VERY cool to have movies on your MP3 player though. I sold my laptop due to non-use and PIA using it for mobile movie watching. I have a 7" portable dvd player, but the batteries last for like one movie, and it's still bulky.

Zen thing goes around 8-9 hours on a charge, and you stick it in your pocket when not in use.

In theory. Just depends the tools and how much you can spend. Case in point, my new editor upgrade allows me to drop the Step Into Liquid 1080p WMV-HD into my timeline and output it as DivX or MPEG HD. MPEG-4 is also built in, but no iPod to test with.

Going say that there is a caveat here... If your source is better than your result, it is always better go capture the source at full resolution and convert it with good tools. HDV converts to SD much better than capturing HDV as SD. Much less convenient, but better results.

OK, I'll buy that, but after my adventures in PPC conversion, I'd like to compare the results of the Archos. :)
