Video Converter

Hi guys. I was wondering what program you use to convert video files from one format or another. I just got a new TV that accepts mpeg-2 video only from USB sticks, so I need something to convert avi/mkv/flv to mpeg-2, and I don't care how complicated it is, within reason. I've tried anyvideoconverter and a few others, and I can never seem to get widescreen to be widescreen, it converts it back to the 4:3 ratio (I think that's what fullscreen is right?). Also it only picks up 2 channel soundtracks rather than just copying over the 5.1 soundtrack as well.

So basically if there's a free and quality video converter, or even paid, I'd like to know about it. Thanks.

edit: Also I'm pretty sure mpeg-2 will do 16:9 ratio, can someone confirm that for me?

DVDSoft Free Studio is awesome. It can convert to any video file, even to mobile phone devices such as iPad or iPhone or Blackberry and it's free!

It has a beautiful interface too and very easy to use

When you are installing it, make sure to select custom and deselect the ask toolbar
