Hey,

can anyone recommend a good program for converting xvid or divx files to a format i can play on a home dvd player ( such as vcd format, i think its mpeg?)

Just so you know, in the future Xvid and Divx make AVI files that are using the Mpeg4 format. AVI files are just container files... like Quicktime or Ogg.

For example Ogg is a container file for Vorbis music, and that's the most common, so people call it ogg vorbis, or just ogg, even though Ogg can contain many different formats, even video. For instance you have Oggs that encase Flac or Oggs that have Theora video format + Ogg audio format. Ogg Vorbis is nice, too, because it can handle up to 255 unique audio channels or something like that. But I digress.


DVD's, Digital Cable, Digital Satallite use Mpeg2 formats. So on and so forth. Just a FYI.
 
whatever you do, DO NOT use tmpgenc. i've tried to convert divx/xvid to dvd (and svcd for that matter) and every time i do there's no audio... the xvid movie had regular mp3 audio. no aac.

my personal favorite is dvdsanta. it'll convert to any other format (vcd, svcd, dvd) so you can play and even burn it for you. personally i just convert to a different format and burn with nero. for the free version there will be "DEMO" written at the top of your video for about a minute or less in the beginning. if it bugs you and you'd rather not get the full version, then you might want to try something else. otherwise, i absolutely love this simple app and would recommend it.
