Video conversion from one format to another

I need a software converter for converting video files from one format to another (eg wmv to vcd, avi to vcd,...) .
The are multiple shareware programs on the internet - they all look quite the same, even the same price of $29.95.
(Could all these programs come from the same author?)
Examples are "advanced x video converter", "super video converter", "AVS video converter", "WinAvi video converter", "easy video converter", ...
Does any one have any experience with any of these programs? with their support?
Does one program stand out over the rest?
