Video codecs

I was wondering how come WMV files have such good compression and why can't mpeg format have as good of compression. I use mpeg 1 and 2 but they don't have very good compression and DIVX has much worse compression though it's still very good.

Divx/Xvid have better compression/quality ratio than any other codec i sow yet.
