I am wanting to purchase a Viewsonic VG2230wm monitor and use it for viewing TV shows and maybe use it as a computer monitor some. I know nothing-zilch, about 'Video Cards". Can someone give me some guidance as to what spec's the card should have. I may have to change my mind if it gets into the hundreds of dollars? I guess I should mention that the TV feed will be from a Dish Network 522 receiver via a 1000 dish.

flexy, I am not a gamer. I don't anticipate ever being one. So that is not a consideration. My very limited knowledge has me wondering where the audio will come from. I know that may be a dumb question but I don't have a clue. I know the monitor has D-Sub and DVI-D connectors and comes with VGA and DVI cables. I guess I am looking to see how the video and audio signals get from the 522 to the video card and/or computer? I hope that makes sense to you. From what I see the 522 does not have either connection, DVI or VGA?

If you want to watch TV on your computer, you can get an ATi card that has Video Input Video Output connection (VIVO), you should be able to use S-Video or standard Audio/Video cable, then get a TV software like BeyondTV, and using an audio jack connector (Like the ones used on headphones)connect it to the Audio Input of your sound card and you should be fine. That What I currently do to watch TV from my Dish Network, I use the S-Video cable connnected to my S-Video socket on the videocard and then I use a Standard Video/Audio cable to Headphone jack cable converter, and I connect the White and Red audio plugs in that cable, and then I plug that cable to the Line In of my X-Fi audio card, and everything looks and sounds good. That's because my card as far as I know is not able to process audio. But if you get a All-In Wonder videocard like the Radeon 9800 All-In Wonder you should be able. But if you want to save money, why you just don't buy a TV Tuner card?? It comes with everything you need for audio and video.

by all in wonder, he is referring to a series of ATI based videocards that are used mostly for applications like you are planning on using the videocard for. they have all the reg. features of a videocard, plus some stuff to help capturing video and etc.
 
i was looking into that..but i dont think he needs a "tuner"...i was checking into those receiver specs..and there is a video out..so any card with Video-In (VIVO) would do...and yes, AIW [all in wonder] should do the job. I just see it as that...a tuner-card might actually do the job...but it would be wasted if actually already has a video feed coming off the receiver...correct me if i am wrong.
