Video Cards go UP in price in last 6 months?

Actually I thought the dollar went down, but don't really pay attention to money markets.

I can't even find the first card online anymore. Except for ZZF who still has it on their site just not "in stock" at the moment.

Am I missing something here?

I'm sure demand for these cards has decreased (since the introduction of ATI HD58xx), but supply has dropped even further. I don't think Nvidia makes these GPUs anymore.

This

ATI EOL'd the 4xxx series, nvidia EOL'd, well pretty much everything but the 240 if I'm not mistaken.

Those HD58xx cards cheaper/better than the gtx285s? I only noticed this price difference between the two Nvidia cards while trying to find an identical card to mine for my brother. I've never owned an ATI and only have heard (in the past) of tons of compatibility issues with certain programs/games.

Maybe it's because my first ATI card was in 2004 but I've owned an ATI 9600XT, X800XL, X800GTO2, X1800XL, and now my current 4870 (with several nV cards in between those) and have never had major driver issues with any of those cards. I have heard that a long way back ATI driver support was bad but in my recent experience I've never had issues. You'll run into issues now and again but that happens with both nV and ATI (actually I've run into more issues with the nV 8800GTS 640 I bought on launch day more than any other card).

I'd personally get a 5850 or 5870 if I were to spend around $300-$400 as those are the fastest cards in those price brackets (unless CUDA and PhysX makes any difference to you).

As with thilanliyan, I've never had a problem with any ATI card that I've owned, and I've been using them since 2003.

The 5850 is a good clip faster than the GTX 285. The 5870 even more so, obviously, eclipsing the GTX 295 on occasion.

Edit: I forgot to answer another part of your question, the 5850 is indeed priced more cheaply than the GTX 285 prices you quoted, while the price has unfortunately risen since launch, they can be had for about $310-315. The cheapest 5870s go for about ~$400 right now, so I honestly wouldn't recommend them over a 5850 at this point.

I had a Radeon DDR and it was fine. Heck, even the rage 3d's drivers were fine.

On the other hand, a 7600gt I bought back in 06 caused a certain program's windows to flash when playing overlay video (in another program). That sucked.

It CAN be a good thing. I just ebayed my GTX285 for $359.00, and just purchased a 5870 for about $50 more. Pretty nice upgrade for $50 IMHO...

I was going to wait, but couldn't pass-up the prices used 285's were getting on Ebay...

Ah, the classic "inflation of what" POV situation.

Are we talking inflation in consumer prices (CPI) representing a decrease in purchasing power for domestic consumables or are we talking about inflation (weakening) of the value of the dollar in forex representing a decrease in the purchasing power of the dollar in foreign markets?

The dollar has weakened considerably in the past 6 months, which makes USD-based investments in foreign lands commensurately more expensive and makes domestic purchases of imported goods more expensive.

At the same time the CPI is holding flat, basically indicating the domestic purchasing power of the dollar is not deflating nor inflating which is exactly as expected given the FED target fund rates of basically 0%.

So if you never travel outside the US and tend to make purchases of things made in the US, your purchasing power has pretty much stayed level for the past year (falling commodities like beef, wheat, corn, oil, metals all help counter the weakening dollar overseas so even import prices are nearly unchanged).

But if you travel outside the US a lot or tend to spend an appreciable percentage of your USD-based income on items manufactured outside the US then you've probably seen inflation (dollar weakness) impacting your wallet.

Really though it is all relative this year (CPI and dollar weakness for 2009) because things just went to extremes last year. Next year could see the pendulum swing to the other extreme as this carry-trade against the USD (shorting the USD, making it weaker still) builds up steam. Japanese Yen all over again.

I'd ebay off that 285 then get a 5850 instead, which easily oc to 5870s I think they're using pretty much same parts for both just underclock it for 5850s. that might even make you money while getting a big upgrade. still 5870 for 50 more is good call.

I was thinking about that too, but I figured as soon as I got a 5850, they would drop in price back to $259.99...:p

The 5870s appear to be in stock a lot of places now (at or near MSRP), but the 5850s seem a little overpriced still. This is my first ATI card since the X800XT back in 2004. :)
