Video Card

Hey can someone tell me what would be the best video card is for 250 and if that is good enough for the latest gaming

for between $250 and $275 you can get a normal Nvidia 6800. That will play all the latest games. It's a pretty big jump from there to the 6800gt. If you can make it though, it's a nice jump. Just got mine today. 🙂

I second the recomendation on a 6800 128MB. Very good card for the money a few dollars more than the 6600GT but it's in a different class of Graphics cards. The upper crust of today's video cards and the best bang for the buck under $300.00

Not in that price range... There is a pretty big jump from ATIs midrange to their high end cards. Their $200 9800Pro is easily destroyed by the 6600gt. There really isn't anything between $100 and $400 that ATI offeres that can compete with the nVidia cards...

So an x600 or x700pro suck compared to the 6800?

Not even in the same ballpark.. or Universe. The 6800 KILLS the X600 and x700... Anihilates them.
There is no comparison. If you were to look at the bench marks it would look like this.

######################################## Geforce 6800 128 MB

######## ATI x700 pro

#### ATI x600

Not true. The 6800 is a very nice card overclockable and unlockable to 6800GT speeds.

If you can wait at all, I'd at least wait until X800XL's are available. All signs point to this card being a new kind of something, and driving prices down on cards like x800 Pro's where available (rumor has it the x800Pro's are to fall to the mainstream market in the place of the x700XT).

How fast of a video card do you need to play games like doom 3 and halflife (on any settings). Is it possible to get such a card for under $125?

There are not cards with GT behind it. There are cards with the GT in front, but still that is terrible advice.

Considering I played Doom 3 on a gF4MX 64-bit, and could probably play HL2 at 640x480@16bpp No Detail - yes, it's possible. 😛

Check out the 9600PRO or 9600XT (or a 9700PRO used).

Ya, i would also go with a 6800nu for the money, but if u can get a good deal on a 6600gt then by all means go for it. There isnt a huge difference between the 2 (6800 gets a boost when AA or AF is on, or at higher res), but if u can spend a bit more the 6800 is better for the higher res/more AA/AF and benchmarks.

Absolutely. I only recommended 6600 GT because I thought 6800s are about $300 (right?), and the OP wanted $250. At least the BFG one is $300. And if you're going to get a video card you should definitely try to get a BFG...

Yes. Get a 9800 Pro and softmod it to an XT (it's what folks are doing now to get every FPS they can out of a 9800 Pro card). It'll play Halflife2 fine, and Doom 3 at medium settings (or above if softmodded) without a hitch.

The 9800 Pro is the best bang for the buck (and get an offbrand or buy it remanufactured to save money -- no sense in paying $240 retail for it new, that's PCI-E price territory).
