A friend of mine has an HP system (model P6645JP) and would like to upgrade the graphics card (stock: GeForce 315) to the best performing card that will work.

So, my question: what's the best gaming card that will work with a crappy 300W power supply? Would the 6670 or 6770 be candidates?

Thank you kindly for any advice or suggestions!

6750 would probably work. The new 7xxx Amd series might be more power efficient so those are worth looking at too.

I believe the 6750 requires a six pin power connector, which the PSU probably does not have. I would stick with the 6670 or wait for the mid range 7xxx series cards which might offer better performance/power.

A Radeon HD 6750 has a maximum TDP of 86W so would work in that system as long as it doesn't have a quad-core CPU, I've seen them work fine in Dells with 250W power supplies. As long as you don't try to go beyond the 6700-series you should be fine, you can use a Molex->PEG adapter to power the card. That said, if the system can take a power supply upgrade, it may be worth it to upgrade to a decent power supply and put in a better card, if the CPU is fast enough.

Sorry, forgot a "P" -> HP P6645JP (Japanese model).

CPU is an i7 870, and yeah, I'd be pretty nervous buying a card with a dedicated 6-pin power connector...which is a shame, the 6750 seems like the best "maximum" upgrade for his system. Unfortunately I don't have ready access to the case so I can't check if there's a free Molex connector or not.

Assuming he doesn't want to wait for the 7700 series, it looks like the 6670 done and done, or 6750 with adapter if he's feeling lucky? (Obviously no overclocking going on.)

Thanks for all the input and suggestions, you guys are awesome!
