Ok, mentioned this in a reply in another thread but decided maybe it was worth its own topic. Dunno really if it belongs here or tech support but here goes anyway. First things first, system specs:

Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe
A64 Winchester 3200+ (@ 2.3GHz)
1 Gig Corsair PC 3200 (in dual channel, 1T)
2 x BFG 6600 GT OC (in sli mode)
SoundBlaster Audigy 2
OCZ Modstream 450 (450 watt) PSU
1 Maxtor DiamondMax 10 SATA 250 GB
OEM DVD ROM/CD RW combo drive
OEM generic 3.5" floppy drive

First I don't understand why I don't have the option in BF 2 for my video settings to play at 1280 x 1024 (my LCD monitor's native resolution). The highest it will let me choose is 1280 x 960, no options higher are available in settings. But anyway, if I choose 1280 x 960 @ 60Hz (highest resolution listed) and set all the other settings around medium, the game actually does play fairly well and smooth. BUT only for a while. After a few minutes a little nVidia alert box pops up telling me that the video card is throttled itself down to prevent damage. Specific message says something about power requirements. I know I have the little extra power pin plugged in for SLI and the PSU is a good 450 watt one. My system is not that heavily loaded so that should be plenty of juice. I immediately quit out of the game and checked temps. It is around 84 C. That is not bad. . .the throttle down temp threshold is like 145 degrees C as it says in the nVidia control panel. This hasn't happened with any other games. If I start up BF2 and knock the video resolution down to 1024 x 768 and reboot (to reset the video clock) the problem doesn't come back up. . .but the performance actually seems WORSE than at the higher settings (maybe because SLI is not kicking in at that low resolution?) It just seems choppier and more jerky than at the higher res.

Anybody else gotten a similar problem in BF 2?

Yep. This never happened on any other game. Only things that have changed recently is that I also installed the latest (77.72 or whatever version ForcWare drivers) when I installed BF2. But even after that, it hasn't happened in any other game.

Un-install 77.72 and re-install 71.89. 77.72 is just an update for supporting 7800GTX's.
