Video Card that will connect via hdmi?

A little video noob help

Is there a video card out there that will connect to my sharp aquos 1080p via hdmi? I've tried to hook my laptop up to it via svideo but it looks terrible. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. Tv only has HDMI, Svideo, and component inputs.

If you've got DVI (using a DVI->HDMI adapter), you should be fine. You can do VGA to DVI (and then to HDMI), but the adapters I found for that are not cheap.

You can always get an HDMI to DVI cable instead of an adapter.

VGA->HDMI is very expensive because it involves analog to digital conversion.

VGA->DVI is easy because DVI includes pins for analog VGA data. This will work, assuming your display device supports analog over DVI (most do). However, HDMI is a pure digital interface and does not support this. So, to go VGA->HDMI, you have to digitize an extremely high bandwidth signal (1920x1080x32bppx60hz is a LOT of bandwidth, several gigabits) and then stream it without much latency. That's a tough job, and correspondingly expensive.

DVI->HDMI is very simple, and very cheap. If your system does not have a DVI port, then get a card with one, or ideally one with HDMI and HDCP so that you can watch HD eventually

You could also get a video card with component output (almost any recent nVidia and I think most ATIs too), and hook that up. Component is GREAT for doing long cable runs, as the cables are cheap and rugged. Long HDMI cables aren't cheap, but not as expensive as one would think, by how badly brick and mortar stores rape people for them.

Also there is some confusion on the term DVI.
There are three "types" of DVI (in regards to pin configuration/connections)
DVI-D : Digital only
DVI-I : Digital and Analog
DVI-A : Analog only

Most videocards (at the moment) that have DVI out are DVI-I without HDCP.

If the OP has a DVI out then the easiest way would be either a HDMI to DVI adapter or HDMI to DVI cable.
