Video Card Suggestion?

Hello,

I am in the process of building my first computer... I acutally had the whole system up and running (out of the case) with my old video card. Unfortunately, I had a defective case from Raidmax (new Samurai model) and they are having me ship it back and sending me a new one (mobo standoff holes off by about 1/8 " so you couldn't line up the AGP / PCI cards. I had to build earlier than I wanted to (wanted to wait for PCI-E) because my system melted down due to bad caps on the old mobo.

The one piece I have been missing is the video card due to the high demand for new cards :p I am not a fanboy, the only reason I have ATI now is because 3dFX went under. I was leaning towards an Ultra Extreme model or Platinum Edition.

I want to be able to play all present and upcoming hits in all their "glory" :) My new system has 3800+ (I'll see if I can overclock it much, never done this before) NF3-250 Gigabyte mobo, 2Gb OCZ ram, Audigy 2 ZS

Questions (what would you advise):

1. I can now buy an EVGA GT and (with EVGA's step up program) upgrade to an Ultra within 90 days. They won't let you upgrade to the Ultra Extreme on their website as they will not release a commercial product.

2. I can wait for a 512 Mb cards from Nvidia / ATI so I can play Doom in Ultra high detail :p When will these cards come out?

3. Buy Powercolor X800 XT PE in the next week (keeps popping up periodically on newegg / with the EVGA ultra that appeared today) I like the bundle with this card and if I could overclock like General Grevious :p

Thank you!

256mb should suit you fine for quite a while and if you really have an itching to go above and beyond on doom3 just sell your card and get a new one when they are out. My vote goes for the x800 pe!

Not sure if you're interested in other brands but allstarshop.com has sapphire x800 xt pe cards for around 899 in stock. Must be nice to have that kinda spending money!

$899? is that what those things are going for? Good grief!

If I ever mention on the mb's that i am spending $900 for a video card, you all have the right to fly to Memphis and smack me on the face. Several times. With a baseball bat. All expenses paid.

You won't be able to afford our flights if you pay that much for a video card ;) :p .
