i am running 2 hd radeon 6850 in crossfirex and i would like some advice on if should upgrade to an r9 280x or if i would just be wasting money.

Depending on the game, a 280X would probably come close to doubling your performance (more in the cases of games that don't scale under CF). I'd say that's a pretty good upgrade, at least if you can get a card at a reasonable price.
 
A 280X would be a good upgrade, it's a powerful GPU.

It will also support Mantle, which will help a lot in games which use it. It's supposed to help distribute the CPU load over multiple cores a lot better, which will help with your FX-8320.
