now that i read your 4670 link, it suggests a 400 watt PSU....

what i dont like about the gateway site is that it says 300 or 500 watt power supply...i wish they would go the way of HP, HP has complete specs of all their models, not just generalized ones...*facepalm*

I believe you'll be fine running a 4670 with your PSU. The 400-watt requirement is overly cautious. If others disagree, I'm sure they'll chime in, so maybe wait for a few responses on that.

ok my big concern:

im running a Intel i3 350 2.9 ghz quad
6 gb DDR3 RAM (dual)
10 USB ports (2 in use for keyboard and mouse)
onboard Realtek sound
onboard Intel Ethernet
1TB SATA 300 HD
Galaxytech 8400 GS 512 MB 64 bit PCI E card
media reader
one slot cooler Antec V cool running off 4 pin Molex
Logitech 5.1 surround sound speakers

how close to the wattage threshold do you think i am currently?😵

that is certainly a good comparison, ill put it under consideration. Is that the only site like that..because that's pretty handy to have 🙂 thank you 🙂

I might end up going with the 4670 here. its sounding like closer to my range, and right now to be honest, im not looking to play too many Dx 11 titles. I know its kinda going against future proofing, but I think its a good "for now' card. and yes, heat is a concern, esp since im hoping im not burning out my PCI E slot with the 8400 i have already burning up at 229 F WITH a slot cooler!!!😱

For what it's worth, I was running an 8800GT 512MB in my old rig with a stock HP 300w PSU and never had any issues. If your 8400 was a single slot cooler design I'm not surprised that it ran hot. My 8800GT was the same way, single slot.

My issue is the fact that the GPU fan died out. Im glad to see that the HIS that was posted has a nice cooling system on it.

My son and I tend to prefer the nVidia cards as they don't give us the installation headaches that ATI/AMD products do. Most recent example: have two ATI cards with DVI output and my Viewsonic monitor will not pick up the signal. My son and I tried all sorts of tweaks and driver options. No go. Pop in an old GeForce 7300 GT and the monitor immediately picked up the DVI signal from it. Please be aware that I am an avereage joe when it comes to tinkering with this stuff and not in the league with a lot of these guys. My son is more proficient than me. Anyhow, for both of us the Nvidia products have been the more painless way to go.

um well it also makes a difference what cpu you have too.

I wouldn't worry about it. I have two different HD 4670's in two different systems. One's been running in an Athlon x2 4450e with 3GB RAM and a Lite-On 250w PSU for nearly two years and the other is in a system with an e2180 CPU, 4GB RAM and a 300w PSU for over two years and I have had no problems with either. I would splurge for the HD 5670 tho if you can afford the extra few dollars, or perhaps the 5570 if you can find one for equal or less than the 4670.

Well, i now have to get the 4550 delivered...just to send it back. Guess i ran too late on the return train. Oh well. But i am getting the HIS 4670. The reason i originally went with Tigerdirect is that a tech friend of mine recommended them. now im going Newegg. Thanks for all your input guys. 🙂

I need to research but is the 4670 MORE powerful than a 5570? GT240?

It appears to have 256bit vs 128, but slower RAM, but more shaders (IIRC maybe I'm wrong)

Does a 4670 require a power connection to the PSU or does it just use the PCI slot?

The 5570 DDR3 and 4670 DDR3 models perform similarly overall in games, although the performance can differ somewhat from game to game: http://www.anandtech.com/show/2935/5.

They use about the same amount of power, but the 5570 runs cooler. Neither requires a PCIe power plug. The 5570, like the entire 5000-series, has more advanced HTPC features, which you can read about here: http://www.anandtech.com/show/2931/4. The 5570 is a bit more expensive than the 4670, so it's a tough call between them. If you're interested in gaming, the 5670 is a much better buy than either at about $15 more, and the GT240 is also superior (for gaming) and can be had for less after rebate.

Ok, i know im going against conventional logic here and Spock would neck pinch me, but I think i might stay with the 4550...Im good and tired of my PC lagging b/c the damn 8400 GS i have is at 200 +F...ive looked at the stats and while its not that much of an improvement, its not the worst either.

Sounds good. You can't actually just compare stats like that, but don't worry the 4550 is better than what you have, and more importantly, your current card is busted, so while you didn't get the best deal in the world, you will have a working computer - and that's priceless. Just install it and forget it. You'll be happy.

The 5670 is a decent 1280*1024 card, you'll be able to turn up eye candy in most newer games, including most dx11 games.

You should really make an effort and get this card.
