I'm looking for some help buying a video card for my son's pc. He uses it mainly for gaming and school work. The games he plays most is Rust and Rainbow Six Siege. He has a 1080p monitor and the following is his pc build:

Ram = CORSAIR Vengeance RGB DRAM 16GB (2 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 3200 (PC4 25600) Desktop Memory Model CMR16GX4M2C3200C16
Processor = AMD RYZEN 7 1700 8-Core 3.0 GHz (3.7 GHz Turbo) Socket AM4 65W YD1700BBAEBOX Desktop Processor
Mother Board = GIGABYTE GA-AB350-GAMING 3 (rev. 1.0) AM4 AMD B350 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.1 HDMI ATX AMD Motherboard
Case = MasterBox Lite 5 RGB ATX Mid-Tower with 3 x 120mm RGB Fans, Tempered Glass Side Panel, DarkMirror Front Panel & 2 Additional Color Trims for External Customization Options by Cooler Master
Hard Drive = WD Blue 500GB Internal SSD Solid State Drive - SATA 6Gb/s 2.5 Inch - WDS500G1B0A

Looking for a budget card that will run the games listed and most other games at high resolution. I want something that is a little future proof.

Thanks in advance for your help

RTX 2060 $349. Only a little more than the 1660ti, and quite a bit faster.

OMG, the guy says a budget card and the guys recommendations are like "Get a 2080ti". Budget card means around $150. If that is your budget then hands down the best card is the RX 570, in fact on sales you can get it for $130 often and it comes with 2 new free games. So essentially its free, if you wanted to buy those games. The games I believe are Resident Evil 2, The Division 2 or Devil May Cry 5.

Alternatively for $200 you can get the RX 580, which also comes with 2 free games.

a 2060@$349 is a far cry from $1200-$1500. He did say "a little future proof".

Not any more. You don't get squat for a gaming GPU for around $150 (+), unless that means "slumming around" with an RX 570. Maybe an RX 580, if prices continue to drop.

I recommend a GTX1660ti AT MINIMUM.

Yeah, if you're penniless (*), then an RX 570 makes sense, at least it did to me. But that's back when mining was a thing, the RX 570 was great for it. I paid $300 ea., for my 8GB RX 570 cards. But technology improves. There's a reason why those cards are $120 now, and aren't really selling. (Ok, the crash of mining was a big reason, I don't know how many people really bought them "for gaming", going by the Steam Survey.)

(*) Or only play older games.

(+) Ok, you currently get two free AAA games, which does have some value. So, consider it a free GPU, when you buy two (select) games at full price.

That said, I still think AMD is tops for 2D work, and for a 4K UHD desktop display, the RX 570 is great, probably better than any NVidia card, or at least, it has been for me, comparing with a GTX 1050 3GB, GTX 1060 3GB, and GT 1030 2GB GDDR5 card, and a GT630 (Kepler, equal to GT730).

a rx 570 will play 90% of steams library maxed or close at 1080p.
Ok, that doesn't sound quite like "slumming". Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe I'm just pissed that I spent $300 ea. on a pair of 8GB RX 570 cards back in Dec. 2017/Jan. 2018, and now they're only making around a Quarter (USD) a day for me. I don't know if I'll ever hit ROI on these cards. (And you can now buy them, or even an RX 580 8GB MSI Gaming (X?), on ebay "New" for $170.)

You can spend more on a 1660Ti or even a 2060 RTX but I'd just look for a cheap deal on a 1060 6gb - that shouldn't be too expensive and will play all the games he wants to play fine. Radeon 580 is ok too, but be a bit careful - they can be very loud and power hungry (not sure what psu you have).

If you can wait, the 1660 (non-Ti) that's coming out soon looks like a good bet. The price is rumored to be $220, and it's not cut down much at all compared to the Ti, so at 1080p it should be a great value.

I been slumming for the better part of a decade gaming, more or less. and yes the mining thing made things very stupid. obviously budget is contextual, to me a budget card is one around $100, if shopping used $100 will get you a great 1080p card.i scored an r9 390 for 65, and a 780ti classified for what was basically $50...sure both of these are old, but they offer tremendous value, for new..$120ish rx570 seems to me far and away the best "budget" card. the 1050s were a sweet deal in that time frame larry as distorted as it was, i recall getting several 1050tis and non tis, some sub $100(non ti) and some ti's for $120ish.

i understand some might be apprehensive about buying used and i get that, but there are relatively great budget(to me) cards available.

Budget is budget, you can't magically turn "budget" to mean $350. That is high end. Budget cards mean up to $150, mainstream means up to $250, High end up to $500 and I'd say "premium" tier over $500. Basically people with tons of money, who would rather spend $1200 on a RTX 2080ti, rather than put it in a fund for a car or children's college in the future.

I 100% agree with this, For a wider argument, just look at individual earnings over the last decade. Basically flat. You don't, on average, get people spending more when earnings stay the same. 1+1 =2, not 4. The highly vocal enthusiasts do not represent the world.

Maybe try to snag a GTX 1060 6gb on a sale? Might be possible to get one for around $200.

A recommendation is tough to make when you do not list a budget or the price you feel comfortable spending on a card
You should also list the PSU being used.

1660 Ti or RTX 2060 seems to fit the bill for what you are looking for.

Why go for a refurb GTX1060 at $200 when he can get a new RX 580 8GB with 2 games bundle at $190 ??

No kidding. I'd take the RX 580 even if it was at $200 and without the games. But throw in RE2 and DMC5 too? I just played through RE2 last month and what a phenomenal experience on my GTX 970 at 1080p 60 fps, and the game runs even better on both RX 570 and RX 580 according to gamegpu.ru. And then DMC5 has been killing it in reviews too.

Man @VirtualLarry , I don't know about calling RX 570 slumming. When I think slumming I think something like HD 7770 or GTX 750 Ti that were 720p or 900p cards at best and with heavy settings drops. But RX 570 is still a 1080p60 high settings card for AAA gaming. It's not very future proof since it's on that 1080p60 edge right now, but a year and a half before a new console gen seems a pretty bad time to try to be future proof anyways. Look at how badly GTX 680 aged over this current console gen as a flagship.
