I am looking to upgrade my video card which is currently a geforce 4200. When i play games I always use the 1074 by 768 /w noAA/AF. Originally I was gonna get a 6800gt but I think it may be more then i need. I will be playing games like Doom3 and farcry and i just hate low fps. What video card would you recommend?

what is your budget? You could get a 9800 PRO (for doom 3 i believe the 256mb version to play at high detail, dont quote me on that though) or a vanilla 6800 would probably suit you good aswell.

I have very similar specs to yours. I went with the 6800NU. Not many people like the NU on this forum or in general. I'm not a hardcore gamer and plan on playing d3 1024x768 max detail no AA/AF. That's what I play everything at right now. I'll save the $$$ between the GT and NU and buy a middle of the line card with it next year. 9800 pro is alright but why stick with last generation if you could afford a 6800 NU/GT?

the geforce 6800 ultra gt is the best card to play doom3.
I think since your surrent card is good, make an upgrade for pci express and other better video cards than available today.

I really don't have a budget i could get a 6800 gt but i am wondering if it is worth the money if i am not going to take it to its full potential because i will only be playing at 1024 by 768 noaa/af. If i get a 6800 gt will it last me a long time. If not i could just get like a 250 dollar card and it last me like 2 years then i can upgrade again and get like the gt or higher for 250. Any ideas?

Pretty much anything in the 6800 line is good. The NU and GT are both good values. The NU is around $285 and the GT around $400. If you are looking for something cheaper the 9800 Pro is also good @ around $200. I would suggest you take a look at the 6800NU though.

9800 Pro if you don't need high res. above 1024 x 768 with aa/af.

The GT or Ultra is presently CPU limited in conjunction with today's higher speed CPU offerings & considering the CPU in your rig (sig), the situation wouldn't be any better.

I think getting the GT would be best since you have no budget. It'll play all the old games plus new games later on and the card should last you a while. I personally would get something with at least 16 pipeline .

9800pro. It will serv you very good for 200 bucks cheaper and it will probilbly play doom3 with max detail. But we will have to wait till it comes out! I would wait and see. By the time doom 3 comes out, the gt's may be more widely available so prices may go down a bit.

9800pro max detail on doom3?? umm, maybe on 800x600, even then it's questionable with max details.
if you really want to play doom3 and are curious about the requirements, you should check out the "doom3 requirement" forums.
I'm not saying the 9800pro isn't a good card, but if you plan to upgrade your system in the near future, go with a newer generation card.

9800pro's still hold their value quite well and WILL play Doom 3 at decent settings if not high. Make sure you are getting one with an r360 core and you are set.
