Video card question

I want to now because I don't want to spend $50 on a new video card and I just want too use my old one (ATi rage pro). Not planing to do any gaming right now.

All AGP cards run on 3.3V from the AGP slot.

It's the signaling voltage which differs. 2X and 4x both use 1.5V signaling and an 8X AGP slot should be backwards compatible to 2X/4X.

1X 3.3V signaling
2X4X 1.5V signaling
8X .8V signaling

A lot of people read that the AGP slot in a computer provides 3.3v and think that means they can't use a newer card. You really need to know the slot's AGP rating to know whether a card will work.

Personally, I'm going to say NO, don't risk it. Look it up in your motherboard manual. I have an MSI KT4V-L board, with KT400/8235 chipset, supports AGP 2.0/3.0 modes, AGP 1x/2x/4x/8x speeds, but only 1.5v/0.8v signalling voltages. In other words, older AGP 1x/2x-only cards (like the RagePro) will NOT work with a newer AGP 8x-capable board such as this. The board even had a warning sticker over the AGP slot when I got it, IIRC. OTOH, AGP 2x/4x cards that are 1.5v-capable, like the GF2 MX that I had in here for a while, will indeed work.

NF7-S
Chipset
- NVIDIA nForce2 SPP chipset with MCP-T
- Supports Advanced Configuration and Power Management Interface (ACPI)
- Accelerated Graphics Port connector supports AGP 8X/4X (0.8V/1.5V)

Will it work ?

older AGP 2x cards that do not support 1.5V signaling will not work in an AGP 8x slot the NF7-S only supports 1.5V or lower signaling so for example a Diamond Viper 550 a TNT 1 card w/ AGP 2x will not work in that board. almost all agp 2x cards where 3.3v only and will not working in modern motherboards, the K7S5A a board w/ only agp 4x is the last popualur board that I remember that will support pretty much any card. Basicly only Agp 4x or older boards will support most 2x only cards.

No, it won't work because of voltage issues as stated. The card shouldn't even fit in the slot (Kyros are an exception) and you can potentially fry your motherboard and/or video card as well. Often, there is a LED by the AGP slot. If it's green, then the card should work. If it turns red, better not try it.

It wont work. In my gigabyte manual, it even said clearly that there's an AGP wrong card LED, for cases like this.

My ASUS board has that LED too. The dire warning is that plugging in an older 3.3V board could damage the mobo. Of course, I wonder why a LED if it is going to fry it. Wouldn't that be too late? 😀

doesn't fry till you power it on. the led is active as long as the psu is plugged in.

I don't think an AGPx2 card will even fit into the slot, much less work.

It won't fit, and it won't work. Have already tried it on an NF2 mobo
