Video card question - worth the upgrade?

Ok, here's my situation - I have $300 in Best Buy bucks that I intend to spend on a new videocard - 300 being the max you can use on any single transaction. I'm wondering, given that Best Buy's stock limits me to the BFG line of cards, should I get the 6800 OC for basically free, or should I spend the extra $100 cash to get the 6800 GT OC?

Keep in mind the rest of my system - Athlon XP 2600 w/333 mhz FSB, Shuttle AN35 motherboard, 1 GB PC2700 Ram. I won't be able to upgrade the processor anytime soon, I think. I was leaning towards the standard 6800 OC because I have a feeling that the card would already surpass my processor, and even if I got the GT, I wouldn't see much performance improvement.

What do you think? Would I see much of an improvement going from the 6800 to the 6800 GT, or should I just get the 6800?

If you're going to play high end games, go for the GT you will notice a difference.
otherwise, the regular 6800 :)

Enjoy your new new card!

Get the GT. Most can be OCed past Ultra speeds (heck the BFG 6800 series cards come pre-OCed by like 30 MHz above nVidia's specs as it is), and should last you a while--through a CPU upgrade even. A vanilla 6800 has less pipelines and less overclockable memory.

Get the 6800 and take that $100 and put it towards a fund for a new mobo/CPU/Ram combo. :)

Yeah, how did you manage to get $300 BB bucks ? :)

Dont you think they will hassel you a little over having that many bucks?

Mail-in requests for game pieces. Access to free postage + a lot of free time = a whole lot of Best Buy bucks. Without having to gorge myself on Big Macs :)

Besides, if I can get $300 off a video card, I think it's worth a little hassling. Nothing I can't deal with.

I've always wanted to just go all out and get the 6800 GT - and now you've managed to talk me into thinking doing that would be "rational" as well. Thanks much! :)

If you are already spending 300 on a vid card, nothing hurts spending another 100 on a better card.

I would go for the GT.

Far better card than the NU is.

I consider the 6800 the step in between last gen cards & this gen cards, whereas the 6800GT is the step right under the very top, & can be OCed to the top levels :D

i've bought the 6800oc from BB for $242 with that coupon they had not too long ago... wasn't much of a improvement over my 9800pro.... 6800gt would be ur best bet

I say go for the 6800GT because it gives you more leeway for your next processor upgrade, since that's what you're worried about. Nothing wrong with having extra potential, if you're willing to pay a bit more for it.

I guess is a big YMMV then because I did the same thing and it was a huge improvment over my 9800 pro at stock and light years better than it with the 4 extra pipes and extra vertex shader unlocked.

Then again it was $240ish ...not $299 + tx...I suppose at full retail a guy might as well spend the extra $100 on the GT.

I saved about $200 , not $100 so there is quite a difference.

Last year, I got a single $5 piece (which I promptly lost and never got a chance to use.

This year, though, I've had no luck. 300 pieces, all of $1.

Just in case anyone was curious, I picked up the card a few weeks ago. I got an ever better deal that I predicted because I found a $25 gift card that I had completely forgotten about. With a sticker price of $400.99, I was able to walk out with a 6800 GT for $84 (and it would have been less if I hadn't bought it in the city - stupid Chicago's 9% sales tax).

Pretty good deal I'd say!
