Video Card Problems

Greetings Everybody!!!

I purchased a PNY Technologies Nvidia 6200 chipset Video Card. The problem I'm having is that after installation, when I try to turn the comp. back on it won't do anything. Fans will start, but no BIOS, hard drive activity or anything else. It was suggested to me that the card was damaged so i went on and exchanged it...still the same problem when i installed the new one. One note is that the motherboard's AGP is 4x and the card is 8x, but i was told that 8x is backwards compatible and should work?????? It has been plugged in too

Motherboard is a P4VMM2, 512 MB RAM, 2.0GHz P4, 300 w power supply, runing XP HE

Thanks for any advice.. short of "buy a new comp. "

Should be backwards compatible. Your motherboard doesn't have onboard video does it?

It does, from the Device Manager under display adapters i see s3 Graphics ProSavageDDR. I did disabled this too, but same problem happened. Is there something I should try on my BIOS???

Try clearing the CMOS, do you know how to do that?

Who makes your computer? DELL, IBM, Compaq, etc? Is it homebuilt or made by a local shop?

Bought it second hand about a yr. ago, it was homebuilt no name brand.

Even after installing the new video card, the bios might still be defaulting to the onboard graphics..try connecting the monitor to the onboard graphics as well to see if you can get in to the bios.

Problem is that if I hook up the VC to the board, the computer won't start at all. Just the fans and the power on red LED. The moment I unplug the VC from the board it starts up normal again ???

The motherboard model should be printed somewhere on the board and should also appear when the computer boots up. If you recieved any books when you got the computer those too can be helpfull in identifying it.

1. Download the manual.

2. Go to page 13 (just type in 13 where the page number is in Acrobat)
3. Find JP1 (jumper), it should be located next to the watch battery.
4. Remove the jumper and move it to the other side.
5. Turn on the PC for 30 seconds and then shut off the computer and put the Jumper back to it's origninal spot.
6. You have now just cleared the bios.

From page 23 of your motherboards manual.

The AGP slot is used to install 3D graphics adapter that supports
the AGP 4X card which is also backward compatible with AGP 2X
card.

Also check to make sure the video card is properly seated in the AGP slot. If it is slighty off or slightly crooked the computer will not boot.

So if the video card is AGP 8x will the motherboard's AGP 4x slot be able to use it? If not then i think that would be the problem right? BTW I resetted the CMOS, so at least I learned that much. TY for your help I really appreciate it.

That depends. Some video cards are compatable with AGP 1x thorugh 8x and others are 4x or 8x only.

What is the exact model number of the video card you have?

Also your motherboard has onboard s3 graphics are they working too?

S3 graphics are working, It's a PNY Technologies Verto w/ 6200 Nvidia Ge Force chip, has VGA+DVI+HDTV/S-Video outputs.

I'm thinking I should just exchange it for a similar PCI model, any thoughts, suggestions?

Also read up on pages 37-39 of your manual and stay away from PCI based video, you would be better served with the onboard S3 ProSavage.

Things to enable/Disable in the bios for AGP

AGP Aperture Size (128 MB) You can set this to a minimum amount if you want, since most applicatoins do not need it.
AGP Mode (4X) -Make sure it is set to the highest number for the 6200
AGP Driving Control (Auto) -Try modifiying this value.
AGP Fast Write (Disabled) -Keep it disabled.
AGP Master 1 WS Write (Disabled)
AGP Master 1 WS Read (Disabled)

Also check the voltages, AGP 4x uses 3.3Volts and AGP 8x uses 1.5Volts.

Also when you cleared the CMOS/BIOS was the BIOS flash protect enabled or disabled? That may have prevented the CMOS from being cleared.

My neighbor is running a 6200 PCI-e with Socket 939 3200+, two hard drives, and 1GB of ram on a 300watt PC Power and Cooling Turbo Cool. His works fine.
