Video Card problems (6800GT)

I bought an EVGA 6800GT from the FS forums recently and I am having problems with it. I get these strange lines and characters on the screen!

Here's a snapshot of my screen during boot

Here's another one with a black background

So what causes this type of problem?

Is the card just fubar'ed?

I have installed this card on 3 different PC's, all with updated drivers, and it shows the same problems.

The card has an AC NV5 cooler on it. I have already tried removing the HSF and reapplying AS5 and reseating it...it didn't help :(

Thanks for any advice!

More than artifacts.. This card is DEAD. Common problem on 6800GTs, in-fact my PNY reference 6800GT died the exact same way as your screens show. If its a AGP model, don't worry as the 7800GS, while not seeming faster by specification is actually decently faster stock, are much cooler running and much better overclockers. Getting cheap as chips too.

The X1950pro AGP are also very good cards, hotter running but better at AA and ultra shader heavy games.

I've also not heard of ether of them dying out after a period of good use like the 6800GT, my sister has been running a BFG 7800GS in her computer in a hot third room floor down in southern california for almost two years being a big Oblivion and Sims 2 fan.

Thanks for the reply! So this card is in fact dead! FUBAR!

Maybe I can recoup some of my costs and sell the HSF.

Anyone need an AC NV5? :)

Yep... no question about it, my first 9800 Pro did the same thing right before it completely quit on me. :(

I would look into getting an X1950 Pro to replace it provided you have at least a decent quality 450 watt power supply ... otherwise I would suggest a 7600GT AGP or a 7800GS which isn't nearly as fast, but draws a lot less power & will cost $40-$50 less.

A 7800GS will annihilate a 7600GT and keep up with a x1950pro somewhat over-clocked. Even the older G70 based ones were sure fire for 470/1450. X1950pros are getting cheaper so just go for whatever the deal is, just stay away from the 7600GT unless you game at 1024x768.

Not really true, benchmarks show there to be little difference between these two, except perhaps at very high resolutions.

I do agree with your 1950pro recommendation though.

heh, his screenies look familiar to me, but my videocard didn't die, I saw those things when I was overclocking and my system freaked out, and I had to reset the CMOS I think.

A 7800GS is faster then a 7600GT when overclocked or at higher resolutions where the GT is hurt by its 128-bit memory bus, but won't keep pace with an X1950 Pro under any circumstances ... a 7900GT is a lot faster then the GS & its still beaten by the Pro in many benchmarks.

When I moved to my current location in November, my PC would display stuff like that. Windows XP worked fine but some video wouldn't display and it wouldn't run games at all.

Thankfully, it turned out to be the motherboard and not my 6800gt.
