Video card problem

I've tried to upgrade a video card to a Viper II Z200 card, but I keep getting random lockups which require a hard reboot. After several tries it was able to get throught the dxdiag tool without incident - but then I put it to a video test that made it lock up again. When it locks up its not from playing games, just stuff like opening outlook express.

I tried different drivers from Diamond, removed the modem in the slot next to the agp slot, all to no avail.

The card was delivered to me in a box that had a big gash in it; could an impact have affected this card? Could it be a power deficiency problem?

The setup is:

EFA motherboard ZX chipset E6ZX-AT
win98se
directx 8.1
sis 6326 4meg agp video (the old card that performed rock solid)
sblive
aopen fm-56 modem
pinnacle studio pctv
pixie 770c monitor
logitech cordless mouse usb
usb hub

Thanks for any input

Savage based video cards had a lot of issues when it came to gaming, though I'm not sure about how they were in normal 2D use.

Something I have run into before, is that some remants of old video card drivers, goof up the new card. One system I had to wipe and reload, because I couldn't get it to play certain games. Then it worked.

Thanks for your response.

I formatted my c drive and reinstalled windows with the viper card. Then I installed the viper driver along with directx 7. It passed the dxdiag test.

After that I tried to install the sblive drivers, and it locked up like before. After a hard boot, I tried to install the modem drivers and it locked up. The card is not getting very hot when it locks up.

Are you installing the latest drivers? Does the Viper graphics installation install any extra software that might be causing issues? Are there not DirectX 8 compatible drivers that you can install?

How about leaving it installed as Standard PCI Graphics Card, installing other devices and installing the graphics card last?

Thanks for your help. I'm currently using an old driver for win95 from this page that seems very stable. The only thing wrong that I can see is that it won't play realvideo at full screen, but it can play windows media at full screen.
