video card pricing makes my head hurt

seriously, the main site says 'x800 xl is the $299 price point competitor' but the cheapest one is $399 at newegg. no name places on froogle aren't any cheaper.

and whats with the 6800 ultra? unless you were on top of things and got that BFG deal at outpost the other day you're paying out the nose on those.

hell, it's cheaper to buy a dell with a nice video card in it than the videocard itself, sometimes (mmm refurb coupons)

is this all HL2's fault?

It's the gamer's faults. They're willing to pay the prices, so the companies are willing to jack those prices up.

just makes me think i'm more likely to upgrade my notebook before my desktop.

lets see... this summer i'll be running a two and a half year old mobo, a 2 year old processor, and a 2 year old video card. ugh.

i agree that it sucks donkey balls. video card pricing is kinda over the top. it forces guys like me to settle with a vidcard that is 3 years old and sh~tty. actually, my whole system is outdated but it's all i can afford.

i mean, as long as i'm not using AA and AF and all the nice graphics i can still play doom3 on the 9800 pro. is a 2.3 ghz athlon xp really that slow?

of course, anand stop including them in the benchmarks, so i really don't know if it is or not. is a 6600gt a wise upgrade path? i don't know. i doubt it, actually.

If you are going to in essence spend a few hundred dollers just to play Half-Life 2 it is not worth it.

Maybe the videocards should come bundled with the games these days.

The 6600 isn't enough of an upgrade to pay for itself.
I use the 9800 Pro backed by 1 GB Corsair RAM on an ASUS K8VSEDX board with a amd 3200 and it screams along like a trooper at 1280X1024.
I can play HL2 all day long and it's gorgeous.
It ran for sh!t until I had all the right drivers in place.
I used different driver combos and tested with 3dmark until I was blue in the face, but finally found the right mix of drivers and bios settings to deliver some serious bang.
The answer is in the software as much as the hardware.

Go for a 6600gt. You should be able to pick one up for around 180. It has pixel shader 3 and really good video quality and is faster than the 9800pro. Dont let the ati zealots fool you. Also wrong forum dumbass.

you, sir, have far too much time on your hands

my hardware is basically at the point where the platform doesn't have any more room to it. and upgrade that is worthwhile will consist of processor, motherboard, video card, and probably ram.

meh, i probably won't bother upgrading until dual core processors become available.

*mmm dual core windows 64 bit with dual video cards and a 24" LCD....*

yeah, that is the way to win my affection!

since my thread is a mixture of topics (wanting to know if it was HL2's fault, for instance) i figure i'd post it here.

plus, i just want to vent, and there is no forum marked 'venting'

6600GT's overclock retardedly easy. I went from 2300 > 3500 in 3dmark05 with a simple "Push this button to get max stable overclock."

Lunatic Fringe
I know you're out there
You're in hiding
And you hold your meetings
We can hear you coming
We know what you're after
We're wise to you this time
We won't let you kill the laughter

Lunatic Fringe
In the twilight's last gleaming
This is open season
But you won't get too far
We know you've got to blame someone
For your own confusion
But we're on guard this time
Against your final solution

We can hear you coming
(We can hear you coming)
No you're not going to win this time
We can hear the footsteps
(We can hear the footsteps)
Way out along the walkway
Lunatic Fringe
We know you're out there
But in these new dark ages
There will still be light

An eye for an eye
Well, before you go under
Can you feel the resistance
Can you feel the...thunder

Yeah, I'll say.

my hardware is basically at the point where the platform doesn't have any more room to it. and upgrade that is worthwhile will consist of processor, motherboard, video card, and probably ram.

That's what I did last time around.

Thanks a lot man. Now I gotta fap.
Good thing you didn't say SATA in there or it'd have gone off spontaneously.
