I asked this in the technical support fourm and was pointed to posting over here where there were more video card experts around...

I've had this problem for a while but it wasn't bothering me as much as it is now. It seems when i play certain games that eventually the screen will freeze and the video will start ripping. Eventually the computer just locks up and restarts itself.

This happens alot in games where there is alot of movement on the screen, such as EA Sports games, but it doesn't necessarly have to happen there. I can play the sims fine in actual live mode but if i'm in the neighborhood screen for a couple minutes or trying to create a new character then the above problem happens.

In EA Sports games the problem doesn't happen in the static menu screens but more in live action play. I seem to be able to play NHL06 ok 95% of the time, but i've never been able to get through a game of madden.

My system:

Epox 9NPA Ultra
AMD X2 3800+
1GB RAM
MSI X800 Pro PCIe
Lian Li case
Antec SmartPower 2.0 SP-450 ATX12V 450W Power Supply
3 optical
4 harddrives
GameTheatre XP sound card

The slot below the video card is free so there should be lots of air for the fan on the video card. I tried to run the games with the case open and with a fan pointed into the case but that didn't solve anything as I still had the same problem as I described above.

According to Speed fan my temps are:

System: 37C - not sure when in use
CPU: 39C - up to 45C when playing a game

According to Riva tuner:

video card: 49C on idle - anywhere form 60C - 65C when playing a game.

I've noticed that when the screen starts to rip and I get out before it crashes that the video card temp is in the 65C area.

The computer works great in everyday usage it's just when playing games that this problem occurs.

Anybody have any ideas what could be causing my problem?? If it was a heat problem you'd think the fan pointed into an open case would solve it, but it didn't.

Somebody pointed towards my PSU not haveing enough wattage but I can't see how i'm using 450W, tho my estimates could be way off.

Thanks for any help!

could the video card sharing an IRQ with a promise IDE controller cause a problem?

I only have one other PCI slot free but that would take up the spot right next to the video card, which could restrict airflow to the video card fan.

It has always happned since I build the system last September. I just never really cared to do anything about it until now since i could play some games and not others. It only happens in games from what i can see.

Are you overclocking anything in your system?

then it's very possible that you had a faulty card to begin with

it's not uncommon these days to get a faulty card

hmm that would suck. An RMA would probably take awhile to get back and i can't be without a computer....

Would this probably be my best bet?
