video card/motherboard compatibility

when running a single video card setup will the system/video card run better by having the matching SLI/Crossfire motherboard...for example if I have an X1900XT card, will having the A8N32-SLI board impede performance in any way? is it best to have an Nvidia single card setup when using an SLI board and vice versa is it best to have a Crossfire board (Asus A8R32-MVP Deluxe) when using an ATI single card setup?....does it make even a slight bit of difference, performance/compatibility wise?
