Video card/Motherboard compatibility issue

So I've been having trouble with my desktop for the last month or so after installing a new video card and I eventually but the bullet and sent it to tech support after a significant amount of unsuccessful troubleshooting on my part. They got back to me today and said the problem was that my video card (http://www.club-3d.com/index.php/products/reader.en/product/radeon-r9-280-royalking.html) was not compatible with my motherboard (http://ca.msi.com/product/mb/P67AG45_B3.html#hero-overview).

This is news to me, as I thought a PCIE 2.0 slot would be backwards compatible with a PCIE 3.0 card. Is it possible that there is a BIOS compatibility issue? The BIOS for my mobo was last updated by MSI in 2012 after all. I was told that the best card that would work with my setup was a GTX 660 which also doesn't make a ton of sense to me. That being said, I don't think they're trying to scam me as I sent my PC in thinking the CPU and motherboard could have been fried and they told me they were fine. I'm running windows 7 with an i5 2500K if that narrows anything down.

Can anyone shed a bit of light on the compatibility between motherboards and video cards? Thanks!

Compatibility could be a problem, but very doubtful if you have BIOS 1.A or newer. Sometimes even after removing the drivers it can be difficult to switch from Nvidia to AMD (and reverse). There are driver removal tools out there, and a fresh OS install is always an option.

So do you have the computer back yet? Here is one of the aforementioned driver cleaners to try:

A 290x is also draws more power than a 660, so if you were pushing the limits of the original power supply, that could also cause a problem.

Once you get your computer back, tell us what parts are in it (specifically the power supply) and give us more detail about your problems.
