Video card just fried. Best bang for my buck? Did I order the right card?

Hey guys,

My faithful and highly overclockeable 6800 GTO (read about it here) finally went kaput. Ironically enough it died two days before it was going to go in my new E6300 machine. I believe it died simply because the Dimension 8400 was seriously lacking in cooling.

Anyways, I have been completely out of the video card loop for quite awhile. I was inundated with 3500 different options, all of which had at least one "X" in its name. I want bang for my buck, overclockability, as quiet as possible, and a good warranty. I came across this thread and became very excited! I was also nervous about ZZF selling out of the card so I put my order through ($261 shipped 2nd day). I have until tomorrow to cancel my order if need be.

What I play:
MOH:AA
BF2

Machine specs:
E6300
Gigabyte DS3
2 GB DDR2 (can't remember the speed right now)
WD RE2
Thermaltake Tsunami (I got the last black one at ZZF and now they're discontinued!)

Did I make the right decision? Thanks in advance!

You did good. The x1900xt was the best bang for the buck prior to this card coming out, but had power/noise/heat drawbacks. The 7900 GTO is perfect for the money. If your card has 1.2ns memory, you'll have a GTX for $260.00

A purchase that makes so much sense, you deserve a reach around. Now go get one... ;)

I'm not sure how I should feel about your response :D

Thanks, I think...

Looks like its a pretty nice card ... a bit faster then an X1900GT or 7900GT & to beat it by much you would have to step up to a full 7900GTX or an X1900XT 512mb so I'd say stick with it because it appears you got yourself a pretty good deal. (Plus theres always the chance of a successful mod to GTX)

The only alternative I'd seriously consider at the moment is this 256mb Sapphire X1900XT which will outperform the GTO in many benchmarks for $249:

Just kidding Dak. Better to have some sense of humor, even if a sick one...
