i just bought a new stick of 256 ram, dvd rom, and a new video card geforce 4 ti 4200 128mb. i have a fresh install of windows xp, got all my video drivers and everything worked fine for a few days. the problem is that when i play any game black hawk down, c&c generals, counter strike, bf 1942, anything after about 5-30 min it crashes like every time. not once have i been able to run a game for longer than an hour. i thought it was heat so i took the side of my case off put a window fan on high and made sure no cables inside were killin air flow. but still crashes. so now i have no clue what it could be? can anyone please help me????? thanks in advance ....oh and i have direct x 9 and when i crash it either shoots me right to desktop or gives me windows error (you know the one where you can send a error report)

Upped my power supply. That's evidently not your problem though, so no ideas, sorry.

It only crashes when playing games? Not when doing other things?
Can't you view the details of the crash when it offers to send the info to Microsoft (going from memory)
Can you view the crash details in the Event viewer? In the event viewer there should also be a link taking you to an MS diagnostic page that might help.
Could be a bad video card....or bad ram.

I agree with Dan. You made a small but common mistake of upgrading more than 1 part at a time. It makes it more difficult to identify the problem. In your case,
it could be one of three new things you installed. DVD rom, video card, and the new stick of ram. Put your Old Geforce card back in and play as you normally would.
If the system crashes, its most likely you either have bad ram or 2 very differents sticks of ram. If your system doesnt crash, it is most likely the vid card. The only other distant possibility is your dvdrom. Do you use the new dvdrom to play games that require a cd in the drive? You have to start a little trial and error. Process of elimination. I would put your system back the way it was before any upgrades. then install one at a time and test. When you finished testing one piece, remove it and install the next one. I dont know what else to tell you for now.

Good Luck,
GM
