Video card for older computer

I have an older computer that uses PCI Express X16 card. The original card was a EVGA 256-P2-N553-AX GeForce 7600GT 256MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 SLI Supported Video Card

Can I put a fast 2.1 card into this computer or will it be better to get PCI Express X16 card?

If by 2.1 you mean PCI, I can't see why you'd opt for that over using a PCIe slot, since one is available -- though I'm guessing, given the age of the board, it's a 1.1 slot... even though any card would more than likely be backwards compatible, there's probably a point at which you'd be wasting money on capped performance.

With a socket 939 motherboard, even assuming a dual-core (X2) processor you're going to be pretty severely CPU-bound if you are planning to game on this setup.

If you're just replacing the 7600GT for basic video output, pick up the cheapest PCIe card you can find and don't worry about the slot, they are all backwards-compatible.

If you plan on light gaming, I'd probably suggest a GTX 650 (around $80 AR on newegg) as long as your PSU can handle it (6-pin power plug needed).
