video card for CS?

hey.. i'm upgrading my comp to a 2500+/a7nx, but right now i have a radeon7000 card. will this let me run CS at 1280x980 resolution with all options and good performance?

if not, should i get like a $60-70 video card for now and wait for new ones? or is that a waste of the $, and should i get something ~$140 (like radeon9600)?

right now cs is the only game i want to play, but i do want to play some of the newer ones.. i kinda think any card i buy now won't work so well when HL2 and doom3 come out anyways right?

so i guess it's like, do i spend the $140 now and have that last me a while, or spend $60 now and then upgrade later?
 
I'd stick with the 7000 and see if it does what you need it to for CS if possible, and wait for R420 and NV40 to hit the shelves and drive prices down on the current generation of cards. If you would have posted this yesterday, I would have sold my FX5700 to you.
 
I'm not sure what they did with 1.6, but it definately needs more video resources than 1.5. My old system that played 1.5 fine hiccups on 1.6. Maps like Aztec, if you leave the weather on (cl_weather) will make your Radeon 7000 crawl at that resolution.

But try it out first and see how it plays before you decide to buy a new card.
 
As i remembered GF2 GTS work great for Counter Strike,

but oh well, for HL2 and Doom3,

u'll need those cards recommended by the guys
 
The 7000 might run CS fine, depending on your definition of fine and whether you want AA/AF or not. I remember playing CS on my Radeon LE just fine. If you want to play newer games then the 9600Pro is a great card right now, I think.

CS is still amazing as any other game.. its what you like. Heck someone could still like command and conquer =P

Get a 9600 Pro... 128 MB, it'll run cs and then some, plus will run any other game out on the market right now with goodies
