video card for 300 watt

ok i have one hd my psu is a stock dell 300 watt PSU and it is not a slim case it is the full out dell inspiron 518 case and the PSU says delta electronics in small writing and there is one optical drive

Any idea how many watts the 12v line puts out?
You might be able to go for something like an HD4770, especially if there's not much in there beyond a non-overclocked CPU, single HDD

You might even be able to go for an HD4850, although the HD4770 is about the same in terms of performance and uses less power (if you can find one).

http://www.xbitlabs.com/articl...m-wattage_6.html#sect0 for reference of what sort of draw you would be looking at with even an HD4850.
My personal experience of an overclocked E5200 with 4 HDDs and an HD4850 and quite a few fans is around 250w from the wall (so probably ~220w actual).

It all depends more on what sort of amps the 12v line of your PSU has available rather than strictly how many watts it is rated for.

From the information you gave so far assuming a bit

Power usage load

40w - core 2 duo 2.53
5w - 4gig
25w - motherboard
? - current video
15w - hard drive
20w - DVD, fans, misc

105w + current video card.

~ 12v amps above 7.5a

BTW what is your budget?

You're looking at , 9600gt (70w), 9800gt (70w)(energy efficient version) ,9600gso (80w), 4670 (45w), 4770(50w)

the video now is an onboard but i will shut it off when i get a new onw my budget is from 50-120 but no more and i would like to keep my PSU i have now

If you're really looking for gaming performance, I would get the

4770 or the 9800gt Energy Efficient version both in the $85-100 range.

The other cards can be had for much cheaper.

The 4770 which was all in stock last week is gone now as far as I can find.

If you need it tonight your best price/performance may be the 9800gt EE version

Edit: Looking around

PNY 9800gt EE version

Scratch this - In reality you could get away with a regular 9800gt or even a 4830 both which come in under 100w 8a

Edit: that would actually be pulsing it. At 8a VC + 7a system you're looking at 15a on an 18a system or 83% maximum. It could work but would be Ill advised.

The final decision must be yours.

Your best performance since you can't get a 4770 will be the EE 9800gt

approx performance in my opinion 4670 (very slightly) <= 9600gt < 9800gt = 4830 < 4770

ok so ill just go with the 9800gt EE cause i looked everywhere for the 4770 and could not find it if anyone finds it for less than 110 post a link please

You guys recommending 4770/4830/regular 9800gt are missing something very important

His PSU will have no PCI-e connector, nor molex connectors for a molex -> pci-e adapter

OP, you need to make SURE that the card you buy doesn't need a pci-e power connector or it will not work in your PC. This means your only good options for gaming are HD4670 or 9800GT EE. None of the 4670's need a power connector, and are cheaper, but are also a couple steps slower. The 9800GT EE will be noticably faster, but is more expensive. If you go for the 9800, be *sure* that the model you order lacks the pci-e connector, because most 9800's still require them

*Please ignore the above paragpraph about pci-e power*

I just read in one of your other threads that somehow you managed to get two unused molex connectors in your Dell PSU, which I haven't seen in years. This means you can support up to 1 6 pin pci-e card, which changes the recommendations entirely. With this new knowledge I recommend picking up an ATI 4850. It will be faster than any of the cards you have mentioned in your several threads, as well as being cheaper than some of them (theres an XFX on newegg for $85 AR with lifetime warranty and custom dual slot cooler)

Also I feel the need to add...

Please calm the hell down. It is very unnecessary to make 5 different threads basically all asking the same question. If you happen to not be able to order one tonight your head will in fact *not* explode, and you can trust me on that

Make more unnecessary threads and you will likely get a warning from one of the mods. Try to keep everything to one thread, unless they are two very different topics. Then you would be able to make two valid threads
