Does X800XL run CS:Source at 1680x1050 with decent fps? Looking to upgrade because my 9800pro has trouble at that resolution in Source. Does anyone have a similar setup?

My system:
Athlon 64 2800 (S754)
Ati 9800 Pro
1 GB Corsair Value
MSI K8N Neo Platinum
Antec SLK2650-BQE (Antec 350W PS)

I do, even with the latest patch my Powercolor X800XL at stock settings gets 82.00 FPS at 1680x1050 with 4AA/8AF.

DoD is another matter, with HDR on at those settings I hover around 30fps.

A 6800 GT would do almost as well as the x800 XL in normal HL2/CSS/DODS and totally owns it with HDR on.

I have a 2005FPW and a 6800GT and I stay at 60FPS all day long. I probaly could do more but I turn V-sync on.

But I can't play CS:S on the 2005FPW since I play in CAL. The performance of every LCD I have tried does not compare to a trusty CRT.

yup you should be able to play CS:Source comfortably with a XL even at high resolutions with 4AA/8or16AF.

i was wondering the same exact thing as the OP...but should i spend another $120 for the 7800GT instead of the XL? Would i notice a huge difference in terms of performance and IQ? (Using 2005FPW)

X800XL or 6800GT would give almost exactly the same performance in CS:S and both would be excellent at 1680X1050. I'm running an X800XL on a 2005fpw myself :) .

The 7800GT is a faster card overall. In CS:S, the difference would not be much (Source games are one of ATI's strongest suits). In many other games, the 7800GT would seriously outpace the X800XL. If you can afford it, the 7800GT is an excellent choice and should be more future-proof (although I shudder whenever I use this term since no card will be perfect forever).

Not so sure about that, look at anandtechs article, and they admit that ATI hardware runs HDR better than NVidia. Only the 7 series will beat out the x800 series.

GT will kill the crap out of a 6 or X800 series card with HDR. It's a huge difference.

I play CS:S at high settings on a 2005fpw all the time and I get excellent fps. I've used a 6800GT at stock for 8 months and it will perform about the same as an X800XL. You'll have no problems playing CS:S at 1680x1050 on an X800XL.

Get the Sapphire X800GTO2. It's cheaper than the X800XL and can be unlocked to be twice as good. :D

I have a 3800 X2, 1 gig ram, 7800 GTX, and my CS S is super terribly slow on my 2005fpw...jesus...is there any way to fix this? It says I get 120 + fps and it feels like 20 :(

No, it wouldn't and you're totally confusing things. The 6800GT supports Open EXR HDR (also called 16-bit FP blending HDR) which is what Far Cry uses. This is the only way to get HDR in Far Cry, but it gives a massive performance hit. Open EXR is considered the 'best looking' implementation of HDR, but also the worst performing (by far), and you cannot run AA with it on.

Valve uses a completely different implementation of HDR that uses shaders, so it has a very similar performance hit on both architectures and works fine with AA on. Furthermore, since Valve is not using Open EXR HDR, the HDR used in CS:S (and the upcoming Lost Coast) works on any DirectX 9 card, all the way back to a 9700 Pro.
