I get a feeling he is forced to use 60hz just to use that rez (probably the highest available on the said monitor)

I would tell him to get the refresh rate up to something more bearable, like 75hz at least, 85hz if possible. That might actually lower the rez he can push on his monitor.

you do get a smoother image at 1280x1024 on a crt. though at 17" the sweet spot would be 1152x768. desktop and video/game are different on crt since tiny text tends not to be much of an issue in games. its a mismatch regardless. but once you get to turn of fsaa, turning it off feels wrong.

looking at it again, seems he runs that at 60hz. he just needs to buy a new freakin screen. 60hz on a crt is torture.

Nope,1152 x 864@75Hz(4:3).
But he is using 1024x768@85Hz(4:3) ATM.
So,which video card will be suitable ?

75hz is mild torture.
85hz is getting acceptable.
any higher end crt that was worth keeping at all never mind to this day could easily do 100hz at these low res.
unless he gets a new monitor, i'd say it doesn't matter what video card he buys. its just a waste. since he uses a new video card with a horrible tiny old screen who knows what his preferences are for fsaa and graphic settings.

refresh rate is just a buzzword today....most were totally ok with 75hz...too much actually affects image quality. I do like 85Hz when running 1900x1200 though on a CRT

but 60hz is a total eyesore :( I get a headache from within few seconds of looking at it. I usually stick with 85hz+, 85hz doesn't seem to bother me at all compared to 100hz though.

I don't understand how 60HZ bothers you people. I gamed at 60hz on my 19" NEC CRT from 2003 to 2009 without being bothered at all. I forget the exact resolution 12something X 1024 I believe?

you are in the minority on that one. 60hz on a crt is really hard to deal with for most people.
