He re-ran the test and it got back to 11 ms. Quite good. It's the inconsistency (spikes) and low minimums that really spoils down his experience. A firmware update could possibly take care of that.

New drive is in order. This good for storage. Maybe SSD?

No, it's fine. (if he did get it down to 11ms and you weren't looking at MY 11ms run.) My hard drive is only a tad faster and my computer is by no means slow. He certainly has no reason to be paying current HDD prices!

I'd at least have 2gb of ram these days. Whether or not its XP doesn't matter. Ram is cheap, and although DDR2 isn't as cheap as DDR3, you should be able to find a 2gb stick for something around $20

no it is not fine unless you want to have nothing but basic services running and only open a few tabs. my netbook drove me crazy because 1gb was not enough to do hardly anything.
 
Have a box with an ancient 1.6Ghz Celeron + 1 GiG of Ram.

20 FF tabs, no problem at all. I can upgrade easily to 4 but there is simply no need. More is better no doubt about that but it costs $. If you can send OP a free stick, go ahead ;-p

That $20 would be better to invest in IO.

some of you must have some magical setups because even just sitting on the desktop my XP netbook was using 700-750mb.

My XP box uses 150-200 megs, desktop. With FF activity it goes up but it's still quite snappy. I am pretty sure, there is something else hogging your box to 700mb use?

It's not about what you got but it's how you use it (c) MC.

Oh boy we got ourselves a video card bottlenecked by the CPU

4850 or 8600 or 9600 GT will give you 30fps , and work with your PSU.. gl
 
put 2 more gigs of ddr2 and a gt240

system will be much more well rounded

edit: radeon 6450/6570 is also a good option around that price range, and will be less of a power hog if you are worried about your PSU.

Are all 20 of those tabs the google home page?
 
HD 5670 512MB, 1GB or an HD 6670 will do. I recommend for the 6670's that it's a GDDR5 version though.
If you want to be prepared for a bigger monitor and more power - especially since you say that it's going to be a SandyBridge build, I suggest a card such as an HD 5770 1GB, a GTX 460 1GB or a GTX 560 Ti. The 5770s and 460s are dirt cheap now.

EDIT: I only read the OP's original post in this thread. I apologise if my response/post to it has a different topic as to what is currently being discussed in this thread.

Well, I joggle between computers all the time. There is difference but I don't focus my attention on it too much. Last time (yesterday) I used this laptop, I can't recall any difficulties doing my tasks.

BOTTOM LINE:

It is absolutely fine and I am going to upgrade this lappy as soon as the new processor arrives but I will be keeping it to 1gb. It doesn't support dual-channel and extra heat is not needed.

-BUT-

If you could send me a 2gbx1 memory stick, I would be most grateful though 😉
